COMMENTARY: Shades of Nazi Germany?

When North Carolina amended its constitution last month strengthening its prohibition against LGBTQ marriage equality, it came as no surprise it was the loudest voices condemning President Obama’s support of marriage equality.

“The last time N.C. amended the constitution on marriage was in 1875 to ban interracial marriage. We look like a bunch of backward jack asses down here! Please tell your friends we don’t all fly Confederate flags & thump our Bibles quoting Leviticus,” my friend Cora from Greensboro, N.C., wrote me in an email.

LETTER TO COMMUNITY: What a week it has been

The last two days have been a civil rights roller coaster ride of events and emotions – not for those with a weak stomach.

N.C. voters approve constitutional ban on same-sex marriage

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina voters on Tuesday approved Amendment One, a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

With all counties reporting, the amendment passed with the support of 61 percent of voters; just 39 percent voted against the measure.

The measure effectively bans not only same-sex marriages but also civil unions, making it one of the strictest of the marriage amendments approved in 29 states.
