A mid-century childhood in North Park

Having lived in my home in North Park for almost 10 years, sometimes I feel like an old-timer. I find myself more and more telling recent transplants on the block about the people who lived in their house three owners ago, and how different things were way back in the “aughts.”

COMMENTARY: Why I’m thankful for our strict gun regulations, even if they might not work

Like most everyone else in the country, I listened, read and watched with horror on Dec. 14 as the details of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. unfolded. I was running errands with my 3-year-old twins, who don’t really know what guns are for or what dying is. We stopped at a pizza joint for lunch, which, unfortunately, had televisions aimed at us from every angle.

A tale of two swimming holes

How does one cool off on a hot summer day in San Diego? Perhaps the most obvious answer is to head for the western edge of the county. You know, the part with the ocean.

But maybe you have a couple of little kids who aren’t 100 percent crazy about kelp and crashing waves. And maybe you’re not 100 percent stoked about the prospect of finding a parking spot near the beach, schlepping 300 pounds of provisions and eventually spending hours cleaning sand out of said provisions, your minivan and your children.

What you need is a pool.

The best kid-friendly Uptown restaurants

As I mentioned in my last column here, and as goes without saying for most Uptownians, one of the great assets of our area is the wonderful variety of neighborhood restaurants. From massive fish burritos for five bucks to white tablecloths and bay views, you can get pretty much whatever you crave around here, including traditional cooking from different countries.

COMMENTARY: Why we love raising our kids in Uptown

In my last column here, I investigated the validity of my perception that over the last decade there has been an increase in families with young kids in Uptown neighborhoods. The results of my research of census data weren’t exactly what I had expected; but they did suggest that certain demographic groups have either been moving their young families here in droves, or getting very serious about making babies during the past 10 years.

COMMENTARY: What's up with all these kids in the neighborhood?

Have you noticed that Uptown neighborhoods are loaded with little kids these days? Morley Field is swarming with pre-K soccer teams. You can hardly walk down a South Park sidewalk without being sideswiped by a stroller. Rambunctious rugrats are running roughshod in respectable restaurants.

Well, you can thank me, among others, for what most Uptownies I’ve talked to agree is clearly a trend around these parts: raising children in our decidedly un-suburban environments.
