It's been more than three years since Prop 8 -- dubbed California's "Marriage Protection Act" -- passed by a narrow 52% in a vote that instantly categorized the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) community as a group of second-class citizens.

Editors Note: aNoteToMyKid.com is a locally-operated website that provides an online space for parents, family and friends to express their unconditional love for the LGBTQ people in their lives, and those in the community a place to share their love for family members, as well. Longtime San Diego LGBT activist Big Mike Phillips is celebrating his 55th birthday today and in honor of this milestone, we've published a note he wrote to his parents on the website.

In searching for a way to give back to the LGBTQ community, Michael Volpatt and I created a aNoteToMyKid.com, a grassroots movement that gives everyone -- parents, family, and friends -- the opportunity to express unconditional love for the LGBTQ people in their lives. The nonprofit's purpose is to remind people that there is a lot of love out there, to bring family and friends closer together, and to give parents and others who may not know how to broach the subject of sexuality an opportunity to learn from example.

aNoteToMyKid.com: Share the gift of unconditional love this holiday season

SAN DIEGO -- aNoteToMyKid.com has a free holiday gift idea that can be personalized for anyone.

The website has launched its first "Give a Gift of Love" campaign, which gives family and friends of LGBTQ people the opportunity to share their unconditional love.

The campaign encourages parents, family members and friends to write notes, post video messages and share photos expressing unconditional love for the LGBTQ person in their lives in lieu of buying gifts this holiday season, to be posted on aNoteToMyKid.com.

SAN DIEGO -- Sometimes it’s all too easy to take for granted those we love. We assume that the people who we surround ourselves with are aware of how special they are to us, but unless we tell them then how will they know how truly amazing they have made our lives?

For many LGBT individuals, knowing that the love of family and friends is unconditional is a wholly edifying experience.
