Kony 2012 mural in Hillcrest vandalized twice

SAN DIEGO -- Along the wall of Kelly’s Treasures Thrift Store at 815 University Ave. in Hillcrest a mural dedicated to the Kony 2012 campaign has been repainted twice in the span of one week after taggers marked it with graffiti.

North Park Planning Committee elects new board of directors

SAN DIEGO -- On March 20, the North Park Planning Committee (NPPC) elected a new board of directors. Elected to the board were of Robert Barry, Cheryl Dye, Brandon Hilpert, Lucky Morrison, Omar Passons, Rene Vidales, Vicki Granowitz and Steven Williamson.

The NPPC deals with land use and development issues and is an advisory body to the Planning Commission and San Diego City Council on issues of urban design, public facilities and transportation.

Uptown Planners elect new board members

SAN DIEGO -- At the Uptown Planners meeting on March 6, an election was held to determine the new board of directors, which will serve for four years. Of the nine candidates, seven were elected to the board and there were 184 votes cast.

The new board will consist of: Ernestine Bonn of University Heights, Thomas Fox of Bankers Hill, Beth Jaworski of University Heights, Jim Mellos of Mission Hills, Joe Naskar of Mission Hills, Christopher Ward of University Heights and Matt Winter of Hillcrest.

K-Rails on 10th and Robinson streets in Hillcrest removed

SAN DIEGO -- The cement barrier that previously deferred cars from the SR-163 off-ramp onto Robinson Avenue in Hillcrest, called a K-rail, has been removed to help alleviate the bottleneck common to the intersection of Robinson and Tenth avenues in Hillcrest.

Luke Terpstra, Chair of the Hillcrest Town Council (HTC), said the previous situation “brought all the lanes down to one [lane] with one stop.”

"Incense Bandit" wanted in commercial robbery series

SAN DIEGO -- Fifth Avenue Books, along with Crime Stoppers, is offering a total cash reward of $3,000 for information leading to the capture of the man police dub “the incense bandit.”

Over three months, the incense bandit robbed at least four businesses in North Park and Hillcrest.

A press release by San Diego Police outlined details of two of those robberies.

Vacant office space in Hillcrest to become Walgreens

SAN DIEGO -- Originally proposed to be part of a boutique hotel, the vacant building at 301 University Ave. in Hillcrest will become a Walgreens before the end of 2012.

Bruce Leidenberger, one of the three co-owners of the property, proposed the space be made into a hotel in late 2007, but had difficulty getting the proper financing. At the time, Leidenberger’s business partner explained the proposal to the Uptown Planners, which was approved with all 13 board members in favor.

1984 Hillcrest sign to be auctioned

SAN DIEGO -- At the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) board of directors 
meeting on Dec. 13, the board unanimously voted to auction off the 1984 Hillcrest sign.

The 1984 sign, which was replaced by the current sign in August 2011, will be auctioned off in early 2012. The board approved the auction with two conditions, according to a news release. “The
 first being that once ownership is procured the sign must be displayed in Hillcrest and that, secondly, new ownership must provide transportation from the sign’s current location to its new location,” according to the statement.
