Tasmania upper house rejects same-sex marriage

HOBART, Tasmania, Australia -- The hearts and dreams of gay and lesbian couples in the Australian state of Tasmania have been broken, after the state government's upper house narrowly voted Thursday to reject marriage equality.

The lower house had approved the marriage-equality bill, 13-11, during a dramatic vote last month.

But after a debate that lasted more than 10 hours, the upper chamber voted 8-6 to reject the bill.

HOBART, Tasmania, Australia -- Tasmania's Legislative Council has started debating a bill that could make the state the first in the country to legalize gay marriage.

The House of Assembly passed the Labor-Green same-sex marriage bill last month, 13 votes to 11.

Dozens of gay rights campaigners packed the public gallery for the debate, which continued late into the night on Wednesday.

Before the debate beganit was still unclear how some members would vote, with at least four saying they are undecided.

There may not be a vote until Thursday.

CANBERRA, Australia -- A Labor MP's bill to legalize same-sex marriage has been overwhelmingly defeated in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

The result of the vote was 42-98.

An Australian doctor who is a member of a controversial Christian sect, and who prescribed a chemical castration drug commonly given to sex offenders to a gay teenager, has been banned from practicing as a General Practitioner.

Dr. Mark Craddock, 75, a member of the Exclusive Brethren sect in Australia, wrote a script for the anti-androgen drug cyproterone acetate, sold under the brand name Cyprostat, at his home in 2008 for a visiting 18 year-old New Zealander who had recently confessed his homosexuality to church leaders.

In Tasmania, lower house approves marriage for gay and lesbian couples

HOBART, Tasmania, Australia – After hours of civilized but emotional debate on same-sex marriage, broadcast to a global audience watching via the Internet, the Tasmania House of Assembly voted 13-11 on Thursday to approve marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

A third reading and passage is required for the bill to go into law.

The Assembly has 10 Liberal, 10 Labour and five Green party members. With the exception of Labour Speaker Michael Polley, all the Labour and Green MPs voted in favor of marriage equality. Polley joined the 10 Liberals and voted against the bill.

Gay Australian Olympian Ji Wallace has publicly revealed his HIV status in a letter sent to the Star Observer.

Wallace, a trampolinist who won a silver medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, said he was inspired to make the public admission about his diagnosis after seeing an interview given by U.S. diver Greg Louganis about his battle with HIV and being a gay Olympian.

“I have been contemplating writing this for a while,” Wallace said.

“I caught a CNN Piers Morgan interview with Greg Louganis here in London. It made me think and think and I couldn’t sleep, so I wrote.”
