Trans Fit: A ball for all

The stability ball has been used by physical therapists for years, and the fitness industry has fully embraced this tool for group exercise and private training.

The stability ball creates an unstable surface and can be used for strength, balance, coordination, agility, core work and flexibility.

Some of my favorite exercises challenge both balance and core strength.

For review purposes, keep the following in mind:

  • When a participant sits on the ball, there should be about 90 degrees of flexion at the knee and hip joint.

Trans Fit: How plant sterols can reduce cholesterol

Small amounts of certain foods can reduce cholesterol.

Plant sterols occur naturally in a host of foods — primarily soybean oil, nuts, seeds, legumes and some fruits and vegetables.

Because plant sterols are chemically similar to cholesterol, the human body tends to absorb them and pass cholesterol out of the body as waste. The net result is that consuming foods rich in plant sterols can reduce the body’s blood cholesterol levels.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows food companies to declare the heart benefits of plant sterols on product packaging.

Trans Fit: Build muscle with light weights

Many fitness experts maintain that exercisers must work within the 8 to 12 repetition range to initiate muscle hypertrophy.

However, recent studies suggests that low-load, high-volume strength training can also impact muscle growth.

Researchers from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, studied 15 men as they performed four sets of unilateral leg extensions at 90% 1-RM and 30% 1-RM. The subjects were instructed to work until failure.

Trans Fit: The vegetarian athlete

As a vegetarian, do you wonder if you’re getting the nutrients you require for your fitness or sport activities?

This is still a common question: can vegetarians perform as well as their carnivorous counterparts in physical competition?

To meet your nutrient needs and improve athletic performance, use these suggestions:

Meeting Calorie Needs

To best meet energy demands, consume six to eight small meals daily. These feedings supply a steady energy source and are easier on the body’s digestive system than three large meals per day.

Trans Fit: A bit about chocolate

Now that Valentine’s Day has just passed and Easter is just around the corner, it means only one thing to many lovers: Time to bust out the chocolate!

With all the recent media hype about the health benefits of this sweet concoction, many chocoholics are rejoicing.

But can that solid chocolate heart from your sweetheart really be good for your ticker?

Health Benefits

Chocolate is made from cacao beans, which contain flavonoids, the same kind of beneficial plant compounds found in fruits, veggies, red wine and green tea.

Trans View: Does transitioning make transgendered selfish?

The first eighteen to twenty-four months of transition for the transgender person can be an awkward period of appearance, very similar to puberty.

It is during this timeframe that a "self-centered" person in transition would indeed not take family and friends into consideration, to allow time to adjust and accept this new exterior.

It's common for the person in transition to feel as if they have finally exited "the cave" and now that they have finally accepted themselves, they want the world to accept them, too.

Trans View: "Work it" to your advantage

After decades of women complaining that men were paid better and obtained better jobs, the high-heeled shoe is finally on the other foot.

ABC, the network that brought LGBT personalities to the air in shows such as Modern Family, Brothers & Sisters, and the heavily promoted Chaz Bono on "Dancing with the Stars," most recently televised a new program "Work It," a comedy similar to the 1980s "Bosom Buddies" with Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari.

Trans Fit: The aerobic and resistance training sequence question

When combining the two modalities in the same session, is one sequence better than the other for optimizing "after-burn"?

Combining aerobic exercise and resistance training in the same workout session -- a technique referred to as concurrent training -- can be a time-efficient training method.

Perhaps one of the longest-lasting and most engaging debates for fitness professionals has been with regards to which sequence is better when combining the two modalities.

Trans View: Characteristics of a transgender person

Nature loves variety. Unfortunately, society hates it.

It is highly likely that you have passed a transgender person on the street, at the grocery store, in the bank, at the gym, and, yes, even in a public restroom, without even knowing that that person was transgender.

A transgender person is not just a clone of another transgender person. He or she is different and unique, just as is every other person.

Transgender people are those who transgress gender norms of society by attempting to transition into the correct gender of which they should have been born.
