VIDEO: Local videographer explores LGBT youth homelessness in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- Realizing that LGBT youth homelessness is a real problem in our community, local videographer Anthony Gioffre set out to do something about it by creating a short video exploring the problem and possible solutions.

Gioffre and his partner Gary Rader own GoldenLodestar Productions, a videography company that gives back to many community nonprofits by capturing their work on film.

Nation's first-ever Harvey Milk Street signs to be unveiled Tuesday in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- Community members will celebrate the unveiling of the first street in the nation to be named after LGBT civil-rights hero Harvey Milk at a ceremony at 5 pm Tuesday, May 22.

The event, which will take place on what would have been Milk's 82nd birthday, will include brief remarks from community leaders and a reception.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Every year around this time, many community members start noticing signals that the California LGBT pride season is approaching, often saying “It’s that time of year already?”

Long Beach, a coastal city in the southern part of Los Angeles County that is home to nearly a half-million people, hosts its LGBT pride celebration each year on the third weekend of May, which many consider the official kickoff to the California Pride season.

Tijuana to observe IDAHO with three days of events, invite San Diegans to attend

TIJUANA, Mexico -- In honor of the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO), Comunidad Cultural de Tijuana LGBTI (COCUT - LGBTI) will host its annual Jornada Cultural Contra La Homofobia starting today at 4 pm and running through Saturday.

BREAKING NEWS: Rainbow flag will fly high in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- Very soon, San Diego's LGBT community will see a colorful symbol of their pride flying high above the Hillcrest neighborhood.

Today, the City Council voted 7-0 to approve a proposal by the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) to install a 65-foot flagpole in the median on Normal Street where it intersects with University Avenue.

City Councilmember Lorie Zapf was absent from the vote.

The plan calls for the pole to fly an 18 foot x 12 foot rainbow pride flag year-round, and include some minor enhancements to the median, around the base of the flagpole.

SDSU honors LGBT graduates at third annual Lavender Graduation

SAN DIEGO – As the end of the academic year approaches, San Diego State University (SDSU) held its third annual Lavender Graduation Celebration on Tuesday, to honor some of the school’s LGBT and ally graduates.

Nearly 100 people attended the afternoon ceremony, held in a ballroom in the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center, including graduates, their family, friends, and other special guests. Over 30 students participated in the ceremony and received a rainbow “honor cord,” a certificate, and a chance to address the crowd.

BREAKING NEWS: San Diego to become first city in nation to have street named after Harvey Milk | VIDEO

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego will become the first city in the nation to honor legendary LGBT civil rights icon Harvey Milk with a street naming. Today, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to approve a proposal which will rename Blaine Avenue in Hillcrest as Harvey Milk Street.

City Councilmember Todd Gloria, who represents the district in which the street is located, said he is pleased with the vote.

Jim Miller says he is the "complete choice" for Superior Court Judge

SAN DIEGO – As San Diegans gear up for the upcoming primary election on June 5, all eyes seem to be on the mayoral race, city council races, and hot button propositions.

There are, however, a number of other important races that will appear on the ballot, including three Superior Court Judge seats.

One such candidate is Jim Miller, who is vying for San Diego Superior Court Seat 25.

Miller, who is currently appointed as a Judge Pro Tem, is also a County Hearing Officer, and has trial experience as an attorney in criminal, civil, family, federal and state law.

"Equality Nine" trial postponed due to dismissal of gay juror

SAN DIEGO -- Superior Court Judge Joan Weber adjourned proceedings in the "Equality Nine" trial Tuesday morning, saying that prosecutors violated the defendants rights by dismissing a potential juror because he is gay. Jury selection took place on Monday.

California has banned jury discrimination based on sexual orientation, but most states do not, according to an article by Andy Birkey of The American Independent that was published today by SDGLN.
