North Park ranked as one of "America's Hippest Hipster Neighborhoods"

SAN DIEGO -- North Park -- a San Diego neighborhood just east of Hillcrest and north of Balboa Park -- is hip, cool, funky and different. So much so, in fact, that Forbes has included it on its list of "America's Best Hipster Neighborhoods."

The publication included 20 neighborhoods across the U.S., with L.A.'s Silver Lake topping the list.

Youth Empowerment Summit set for Oct. 6

SAN DIEGO -- Inspired by their own personal stories of growing up, local community members have been working hard to present the region’s first LGBTQ Youth Empowerment Summit, Y.E.S. San Diego. Scheduled for Oct. 6, organizers are bringing together numerous leaders from the LGBT community for the one-day conference, aimed at providing a place for LGBT youth 13 – 18 years old to break down some of life’s barriers.

Jason “Cowboy” Huggins murder: Was it revenge or a gay love triangle gone terribly wrong?

SAN DIEGO – Was it a murder provoked by rage and revenge? Or was it a gay love triangle that ended badly?

Jurors began deliberating Thursday afternoon in the homicide trial of Joshua James Larson, 38, of San Diego, who is accused in the 2011 brutal beating death of Jason “Cowboy” Huggins. Larson, who was a model on the cover of Playgirl in 2001, is also accused of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the attack on Nathan Meza, who was with Huggins at the time of the crimes.

San Diego Pride sets dates for 2013 celebration

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego LGBT Pride has announced that its 2013 celebration will take place the weekend of July 12-14. The dates of the annual celebration have been moved up one week, departing from the organization's recent history of celebrating pride on the third weekend of July.

The change was made in large part due to the annual Comic Con International, held in San Diego, which has been scheduled for July 18-21, 2013.

Discount passes available to San Diego Film Festival

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Film Festival, which runs Sept. 26-30, is offering a "Festival Friends" discount offer for those who order five-day festival passes online this week.

The festival, which organizers say will be "bigger and better" this year, includes five days of films, industry panels, red carpet premieres, parties and other special events, taking place at locations in the Gaslamp Quarter and La Jolla.

Rush activities begin this week for Delta Lambda Phi social fraternity

SDSU's Gamma Rho Lambda provides a "familyhood" for its members

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State University (SDSU) Beta Chapter of Gamma Rho Lambda (GRL) is gearing up to host its Fall 2012 rush events and is looking for interested students to get involved.

GRL is a queer-based social sorority focused on fostering a progressive environment for its members to excel in social, academic and community settings. By providing a forum for diversity, expression and understanding, future leaders will be empowered with the courage to affect social change.

Debby Holiday: Keep dreaming and keep believing

SAN DIEGO – Debby Holiday, a popular rock, soul and dance-music singer, will take the stage for a special performance this Saturday at Michael Mack’s “Montage Reunion” party at Spin Nightclub.

The event, which will take place in the space that once housed Club Montage, is being organized to “bring back the magic” of the legendary night spot.

Los Angeles native Holiday, who has performed in San Diego several times, says that there is something special about this city that keeps bringing her back – noting that it was the second place she ever performed live in.

Canopy of lights to add sparkle to University Avenue in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- A canopy of lights will soon hang over University Avenue in Hillcrest, as the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) board voted last night to approve a project to add sparkle to one of the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares.

The Hillcrest Light Canopy Project will install 14 strings of festoon lighting -- attached to the buildings on each side of the block -- over University Avenue between Fourth and Fifth avenues. The lights will include technology to allow the light colors to be changed remotely or set on a programmable schedule.
