TODAY: Celebration of life for San Diego community member Chuck Cook, who dies at age 35

SAN DIEGO – Charles Robert Cook, known by friends and loved ones as Chuck, died Monday afternoon from injuries that resulted from a car accident in July. He was 35 years old.

News of Cook’s death sent shockwaves across the University of San Diego (USD) campus as well throughout the local LGBT community, as he was an active participant in many campus and community activities and organizations.

After a series of standard business items, the board is scheduled to vote on several controversial items, including those advanced from the organization's executive committee.

Brians' American Eatery sets the record straight on re-opening rumors

SAN DIEGO -- While rumors have circulated around the community about the future of Brians' American Eatery, which abruptly closed on June 30 after more than 10 years in business, a Facebook post today confirmed that the popular restaurant will not re-open.

A sign outside of the closed diner currently reads "Closed For Remodel," prompting some to wonder if Brians' remaining owner at the time of closure would eventually re-open the restaurant.

The circumstances of the closure were unclear, but were reported as being due to a financial dispute between the co-owners, both named Brian.

Melanie Laura Cabardo, who prefers to be called "Mel," is an enthusiastic member of San Diego's LGBT community who considers herself to be an ally.

At 26 years old, she has spent most of her life in San Diego, although she was away for about three years on two occasions in Twin Falls, Idaho for cosmetology school and to help her parents run their business.

TONIGHT: Bob Filner to speak at Hillcrest Town Council meeting

SAN DIEGO -- Hillcrest residents are invited to tonight's Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) meeting, which will include discussion on a number of topics of interest to the neighborhood, including a presentation by Congressman Bob Filner, who is also running for mayor.

The meeting, which begins at 6:30 pm, will also include presentations from representatives of other local elected officials and allow time for participants to ask questions or make comments about issues important to them.

Dallas, Texas native Gabriel Joseph is one such musician who has only called San Diego home for about three years, but has already made a name for himself in the music scene.

The performer, who came to San Diego on a whim after packing up his car with no money in his pocket and no idea where he would live when he arrived, says that music is a form of therapy for him, especially dance music.

Saying no to hate: San Diegans stage kiss-in to protest Chick-fil-A | UPDATED

SAN DIEGO – Guys kissed guys and girls kissed girls outside the Chick-fil-A fast-food restaurants in San Diego and Oceanside on Friday afternoon in protest of the chain’s donations of millions of dollars to anti-gay causes.

The kiss-in, part of many demonstrations held Friday across the U.S., follows a Chick-fil-A “appreciation day” called Wednesday by anti-gay figures like Mike Huckabee and supported by the likes of Sarah Palin and Rick Santorum. The chain said Wednesday set a sales record, but declined to release figures.
