SD Unified, District Attorney partnering on youth programs in schools

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Unified School District has voted unanimously to approve a resolution supporting the District Attorney’s Youth Advisory Boards and other DA initiatives aimed at breaking the cycle of gang violence, helping students make good decisions, and improving the safety of schools in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO -- The Rev. Canon Albert Ogle and St. Paul's Foundation for International Reconciliation will be honored with the Pride in Action Award at Equality California's 2012 San Diego Equality Awards.

Superintendent Bill Kowba and the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) will be bestowed with the Equality California Leadership Award.

Gay actor Wilson Cruz ("My So-Called Life" and "Noah's Arc") will host the affair from 4 to 7 pm Saturday, Aug. 25, at the home of Joyce Rowland and Pamela Morgan in the Rancho Santa Fe community of San Diego. Leftover Cuties will provide the music.

Viewers of "Ellen DeGeneres Show" vote for arts grant for San Diego school

SAN DIEGO -- Freese Elementary Arts and Culture Magnet School in the Skyline neighborhood has been awarded a $100,000 grant by Target Corp., nominated by viewers of TV's "Ellen DeGeneres Show."

The grant will be used to support the school's Arts and Culture Magnet Program and purchase new books.

"I'm just so excited at what this will mean for our school," said Alma Hills, Freese principal. "Due to budget cuts, our Arts and Culture program, which provides every Freese student with rich experiences in music, dance, theatre and visual arts, has been in danger of being eliminated.

San Diego celebrates Harvey Milk's birthday with breakfast for 1,000

SAN DIEGO – More than 1,000 San Diegans packed a hotel ballroom Friday morning to celebrate the birthday of gay icon Harvey Milk, hearing inspirational speeches and watching videos that touched the heart.

Stuart Milk, nephew of the assassinated San Francisco supervisor, gave the keynote speech, saluting San Diego voters and their willingness to elect gay and lesbian politicians as a model for cities around the U.S. and the world to emulate.

SAN DIEGO -- On Tuesday, April 12, the San Diego Unified School District's (SDUSD) Board of Education is scheduled to consider and approve a proposed Bullying, Harassment and Intimidation Prohibition policy, with the goal of making SDUSD schools safer for all students.

The San Diego LGBT Community Center fully supports this proposal and has been actively engaged in this important work. The Center's CEO, Dr. Delores A. Jacobs, served as co-chair of the district's Safe Schools Task Force, which developed the policy language.
