RGOD2: Holy Week with Uganda’s LGBT community

For Christians all over the world, Holy Week describes the most important moments in the life of Jesus –his suffering, torture, crucifixion and resurrection. I begin this most solemn week in Uganda and will worship with the little LGBT and ally community at the St. Paul’s Centre in Kampala.

RGOD2: Can the Episcopal Church save itself?

More than 400 Episcopalians are gathering this week at the luxurious Hilton Bayfront Hotel in San Diego to pray, strategize and schmooze over gin and tonics as to how to be the Body of Christ in America in the 21st century.

The Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes (CEEP) represents America’s earliest manifestation of the Prosperity Gospel. Many of the founding fathers and industrialists of America’s past were members of this small denomination. J P Morgan established its clergy pension fund and Eli Lilly endowed many churches in his home town of Indianapolis.

Former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s famous phrase, "a week is a long time in politics," rings true for me as I write this column from New York. SAN FRANCISCO – Considered by some to be the “mothership” of all LGBT Pride celebrations, San Francisco will host its annual Pride event this weekend.

This year marks the 42nd anniversary of Pride in the city, which held its first parade on June 28, 1970 (with parades happening simultaneously in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles) to commemorate the one year that had passed since the Stonewall riots.

Today, June 22, more than 30 Anglican bishops will gather in Uganda to elect a new Archbishop for their 12 million members.

Archbishop Henry Luke Orombe is retiring to develop his own Orombe Foundation to have partnerships with government to “build an empowered God fearing vibrant society.” He has ambitious plans to create a $16 million education center in a country where the majority of his flock lives on less than $1 a day.

Faith leaders, rights activists blast Uganda’s "baseless" raid

The Ugandan police raid on a human rights meeting on June 18 not only had “no basis whatsoever in law” but also encourages violence against LGBT people, international human rights groups and faith-based advocates say.

RGOD2: Saluting the quiet army of people who make things happen

“The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself.” — Alan Alda

My life rolls out in the next six weeks as a kind of nomadic pilgrimage from San Diego ending in Washington, D.C. for the World AIDS Conference.
