San Diego gets state permit for permanent rope to protect La Jolla seals

SAN DIEGO -- The state's Coastal Commission on Wednesday, May 15, issued a permit to the City of San Diego approving the permanent placement of a year-round rope at La Jolla Children’s Pool in order to protect the seal rookery.

“This is a remarkable beach where the urban environment of a city blends seamlessly into the natural habitat of the seals. We need to provide protection for these animals every day, especially as the seals raise their pups, born over the last several months right here in La Jolla,” Mayor Bob Filner said. “Keeping the rope up year-round is the right thing to do.”

Council President Todd Gloria weighs in on Mayor's Balboa Park plan

SAN DIEGO – City Council President Todd Gloria today commented about the Mayor’s proposed changes to the Plaza de Panama area of Balboa Park.

“I have consistently favored the removal of cars from Balboa Park’s Plaza de Panama. Because Mayor Filner’s proposal partially accomplishes that vision and because the project would implement a temporary change, I believe I can support the requested $300,000 appropriation during the budget process,” Gloria said.

The program charges violators up to $490 when the automated cameras catch motorists running red lights. The program contract with the city expired Thursday night and will not be renewed, Filner said.

Voice of San Diego: Campaign promises, meet reality

SAN DIEGO -- Mayor Bob Filner wanted his first State of the City speech be to about empowerment but he couldn't help but hedge on Tuesday.

He compared the city to a patient who had survived years of painful treatment, only to emerge cautiously optimistic.

To thrive, the new mayor said, San Diegans will need to work together.

In that spirit, Filner honored several community leaders he said set an example, and he emphasized how the city can come together.
