College Area restaurant accused of not paying employees for time worked

SAN DIEGO -- A grand jury indictment charges two defendants with a total of 21 felony counts in an ongoing payroll scheme at a College Area restaurant that violated minimum wage laws and California theft laws, San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis said today.

Over a two-year period, the defendants are accused of hiring more than 20 servers and cooks, many of them college students, to work at State Street Grill but refused to pay them after a week of work or offered them a wage that amounted to less than $5 per hour.

Fresh & Easy fined $800,000 for pricing errors

SAN DIEGO -- Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, owner of Fresh & Easy grocery stores, has been ordered to pay $833,136 and to institute a “Get it Free” program to settle a consumer protection case filed in Southern California.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Randa Trapp made the order to settle a case brought by the San Diego District Attorney’s, San Diego City Attorney’s and Riverside District Attorney’s Consumer & Environmental Protection Units.

Suspect posing as doctor made claims he could cure HIV, cancer

SAN DIEGO – A man posing as a doctor who claims to cure HIV and cancer is facing multiple felony counts, authorities say.

Keith Allen Barton, 50, has been charged with multiple felony counts of treating patients without a medical license, identity theft and grand theft. The defendant claimed to be a medical doctor and promised patients he could cure cancer and HIV.

Barton was arraigned Wednesday in San Diego Superior Court on five felony counts. He pleaded not guilty and faces up to 5 years and 8 months in state prison if convicted of all the charges.

Walgreens to pay $16.57 million for hazardous waste disposal violations in San Diego, across state

SAN DIEGO -- A judge in Alameda Superior Court has ordered the Illinois-based Walgreen Co. to pay $16.57 million as part of a settlement of a civil environmental prosecution in California.

“Protecting consumer information and safely handling dangerous waste is paramount for all businesses in California,” said San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, who joined 42 other district attorneys and two city attorneys to prosecute the case.

Three tuna packers to pay $3.3 million to settle claim they underfilled cans

SAN DIEGO -- Three major tuna packers have agreed to pay $3.3 million to settle a claim that they underfilled their canned products, thereby violating federal packing standards.

Bumble Bee, Chicken of the Sea and Starkist entered into the settlement without any admission of wrongdoing, and the prosecutors in the case acknowledge that the companies and their counsel worked cooperatively with the prosecutors’ offices to resolve this matter promptly. The case was handled for San Diego by Deputy District Attorney Gina Darvas.
