LCR San Diego endorses Nathan Fletcher for mayor

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans (LCR) has chosen to endorse Assemblymember Nathan Fletcher for mayor, it was announced today.

LCR is the only nationwide Republican organization "dedicated to representing the interests of gay and lesbian Americans and their allies." With two gay Republicans also in the San Diego mayor's race, this choice may come as a surprise to some in the county.

COMMENTARY: The truth behind LGBT Weekly’s smear campaign against Carl DeMaio

Lately I find myself shocked, hurt and disappointed by the war LGBT Weekly seems to be mounting against city councilmember and mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio.

In fact, you can read some sort of attack against him in the LGBT Weekly almost every week, and it has become very disturbing.

I say this as a young voter, a community organizer, a veteran, a proud member of the San Diego Democrats for Equality (SDDE), former member of the LGBT redistricting task force, and most importantly, a Democrat.

The man, standing on the outside ledge with a water bottle and dressed in black from head to toe, with dark sunglasses and a derby on his head, is talking to San Diego Police negotiators after first being on the phone with Channel 10 News.

With President Barack Obama likely running unopposed for the Democrats, much of the debates and events at this point have been all about the Republican Party. On Monday, Sept. 12, the front-runners for the GOP nomination met in Florida for the Tea Party Debate hosted by CNN; that is, all of the candidates except the openly-gay Republican, Fred Karger.

Political Update: Gov. Rick Perry to visit San Diego TONIGHT

SAN DIEGO – Frontrunners taking part in the GOP presidential debates continue to make headlines, while the only openly gay candidate, Fred Karger, continues to be denied a chance to participate.

San Diego Gay & Lesbian News reported a few weeks ago that Karger, despite meeting all requirements established by Fox News to participate in its Iowa debate, was denied the right to do so. Karger did not sit idly by, however, and filed an official complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

COMMENTARY: Gay-baiting rears its ugly head in San Diego mayoral race

Some people involved in politics (elected officials and activists, alike) sure know how to squash a dream.

Ever since I was 15 years old, I had this dream of one day running for a seat on San Diego's City Council. In 1995, when I was in the ninth grade, then-District 7 City Councilmember Judy McCarty came to my school to speak. After the assembly, I rushed up to her staffer and asked if I could intern in her office (I don't even think I knew what the word "intern" meant then - it just sounded good).
