Parents: School "mishandled" situation that led to their son's suicide

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah -- The parents of 14-year-old David Phan, an openly gay student who shot and killed himself in front of horrified classmates on November 29, are speaking out and accusing school officials of "mishandling" the situation that led to their son's death.

Phan, an eighth grader, had been suspended from Bennion Junior High in this southern Salt Lake City suburb, for bringing a condom to school, according to his parents.

Radio station cancels public affairs program over interview with LGBT advocate

RENO, Nev. — A Fox Radio affiliate in Reno, Nev. has cancelled a public affairs program because the show’s host conducted an interview on Aug. 12 with Dallas-based social commentator and LGBT advocate Will Kolb.

According to Eddie Floyd, producer of the “House of Savoy” program hosted by ordained minister Sean Savoy, KKFT-FM (99.1) station manager Jerry Evans informed him of the cancellation, citing the Kolb interview as the basis for his decision.

Six Eagle Scouts return medals in protest of Boy Scouts’ anti-gay policy

At least six Eagle Scouts from across the country have returned their Eagle Scout medal to the Boy Scouts of America in response to the organization’s refusal to reverse its long-standing policy against gay scouts and gay and lesbian scout leaders.

Rob Breymaier, an Oak Park, Ill., resident, and Dr. Mark Varnum, from Bangor, Maine, are the latest Eagle Scouts to return their medals in protest of the BSA anti-gay policy.

Breymaier said he has lost hope that the 102-year-old organization would “do the right thing.”

Beck was believed to be the last known gay Jewish survivor of the Holocaust.

Beck who was famous for his humorous style of speaking once told a German radio host, “The Americans in New York called me a great hero. I said no… I’m really a little hero.”

Virginia Circuit Court appoints openly gay prosecutor to interim judgeship

RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond Circuit Court on Thursday appointed openly gay Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Tracy Thorne-Begland to fill one of several vacancies on the city District Court, just one month after the state’s General Assembly rejected his nomination.

COMMENTARY: Effigy of Obama on American soil is beyond offensive, sadly typical

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The gloves are off and the masks have been removed in the United States as apparently it has become acceptable, even fashionable, to bully your fellow citizens — or better still, hang an effigy of your president, who happens to be black, with a noose, and in a part of the country where not too long ago, that in of itself was quietly approved.

In Canada, Ontario’s legislative assembly approves anti-bullying bill

TORONTO, Ontario — The Accepting Schools Act, an anti-bullying measure also known as Bill 13, passed through the Legislative Assembly of Ontario on Tuesday by a vote of 65-36.

The bill, introduced by the Liberal Party led by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, was opposed by Progressive Conservatives, anti-gay groups, Catholic educators and church leaders because it would require all provincial schools, including the parochial institutions, to allow students to call anti-homophobia clubs “gay-straight alliances.”
