Lesbian lawmaker elected to California Senate

SACRAMENTO – California Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani, a Democrat from Livingston who came out just over a year ago, apparently has won a tightly contested race for the state Senate.

Last week, Galgiani took the lead over Assemblymember Bill Berryhill, a Republican, after trailing since Election Day. She then began growing that lead as provisional ballots were being counted in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties, the heart of the 5th Senate District.

California Senate passes bill to boost equal benefits law for LGBT workers

SACRAMENTO – The State Senate today passed legislation that will bar the State of California from entering into contracts in excess of $100,000 with businesses and other entities that deny equal benefits to the same-sex spouses of their employees.

The Equal Benefits bill (SB 117), authored by Sen. Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) and sponsored by Equality California, passed in a 21-15 vote.

The bill now moves to the State Assembly.

California Senate passes landmark LGBT education bill, sends to House panel

SACRAMENTO -- A bill that would require California public schools to fairly and accurately portray the historic contributions of LGBT people in social science instruction passed the Senate in a 23-14 vote.

The bill now heads to the Assembly rules committee.

The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act (SB 48), authored by Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), would also add sexual orientation and gender identity to the state's existing anti-discrimination protections that prohibit bias in school activities, instruction and instructional materials.

Sen. Christine Kehoe’s historic bill clears legislative panel

SACRAMENTO – The first bill in the nation to include gender identity, sexual orientation and same-sex relationship status in state government surveys has made it out of committee.

The Survey Data Inclusion Act (SB 416), which would require the State of Califonria to add questions about sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, domestic partnership status and the gender of a spouse as voluntary demographic information collected in California's government surveys, passed the Senate Governmental Organization committee in a 7-5 vote.

Sen. Kehoe calls on military to cease practice of fining discharged lesbian, gay soldiers

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, has introduced a resolution (SJR 2), sponsored by Equality California that calls on President Obama, the Congress and Defense Secretary Robert Gates to stop levying fines against lesbian, gay and bisexual service members who were discharged under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) policy.
