SAN DIEGO -- After a group of students at Point Loma Nazarene University learned last week that their request to start a LGBTQ-themed student organization on the campus was denied, much attention has been focused on the school and its policies.

Last night, Channel 10 News spoke to Sean Lewis, the student who spearheaded the effort to organize "BridgePointLoma," a discussion group for LGBTQ students at PLNU.

Last week, after months of effort, students at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA were told by the Office of Student Development that, “administration will shut down any club centered around sexual orientation that makes it through the club chartering process.”

SDSU to host the Big Gay BBQ

SAN DIEGO -- As a Halloween treat, San Diego State University's (SDSU) LGBT Student Union (LGBTSU) will host the twice yearly Big Gay BBQ, today from 5-11 pm.

Since this semester's event falls on Halloween, the event will have a Halloween theme and include a costume contest with prizes. There will also be a resource fair, free food and drinks, a marriage photo booth, open mic and dance party.

Queer Pin@y conference to be held Nov. 3 at UCSD

SAN DIEGO -- Registration is open for the annual University of California system-wide Queer Pin@y Conference will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, at University of California San Diego (UCSD).

The event is designed to provide a supportive space to facilitate intersecting dialogues on LGBTQI and Filipino-American issues.

The event, which is held at a rotating University of California campus each year, this year will be themed "Queer Imaginations: Ghost, Cyborgs, Zombies, and Monsters."

Campus Pride releases list of top LGBT-friendly universities

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Campus Pride released its annual "Top 25 List of LGBT-Friendly Colleges and Universities" this week, just in time for back to school season.

The list is part of Campus Pride's LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index, which provides rankings on 340 colleges and universities across the nation, giving LGBT students a look at the services, programs, and other resources available to them at their school.

Once again, SDSU recognized among top LGBT-friendly campuses

SAN DIEGO -- Creating an environment where all students feel safe, included and inspired to learn is an important part of the San Diego State University (SDSU) experience. That effort has again been recognized by Campus Pride on its LGBT Friendly Campus Climate Index, where SDSU is ranked this year as one of 32 “Five Star” campuses in the nation.

The Campus Climate Index takes into consideration LGBT inclusion policies, support and institutional commitment, academic life, student life, housing, campus safety, counseling and health and recruitment and retention efforts.

SDSU honors LGBT graduates at third annual Lavender Graduation

SAN DIEGO – As the end of the academic year approaches, San Diego State University (SDSU) held its third annual Lavender Graduation Celebration on Tuesday, to honor some of the school’s LGBT and ally graduates.

Nearly 100 people attended the afternoon ceremony, held in a ballroom in the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center, including graduates, their family, friends, and other special guests. Over 30 students participated in the ceremony and received a rainbow “honor cord,” a certificate, and a chance to address the crowd.

UCSD to host Out and Proud Week from April 23 to April 27

SAN DIEGO -- University of California San Diego's (UCSD)'s LGBT Resource Center will host its annual "Out and Proud Week" on the La Jolla campus April 23-27.

The purpose of the series of events is to give the LGBT community on the campus an opportunity to promote visibility, while celebrating and reflecting on the achievements of LGBTQI-identified students, staff, faculty and their allies.

Organizers also use the week to create public awareness and spark discussion about current LGBT issues on the state and national levels.
