Hillcrest Business Association unveils plans for LGBT historical monument

SAN DIEGO -- Several dozen community members gathered at The San Diego LGBT Community Center Thursday evening to hear the Hillcrest Business Association's (HBA) plans for the base of the Hillcrest Pride Flag.

The flag pole, which was installed last July, has swiftly become an important community landmark and HBA sought community input at the meeting as it begins work on Phase 2 of the project, which will include a LGBT historical monument at the base of the pole.

The Center launches Project TRANS, a transgender services program

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego LGBT Community Center has launched Project TRANS, its transgender services program.

Project TRANS (Transgender Referrals, Assistance, Networking and Services) will serve as an umbrella for the various services The Center has previously offered specifically to the transgender community, including discussion groups, behavioral health services, HIV prevention services, youth services and more.

San Diego LGBT Community Center is closed for the remainder of the day

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego LGBT Community Center has been closed for the remainder of the day, Wednesday, May 8. Staff members at The Center say the closure was necessary because of the need to use chemicals to seal the wood as the auditorium floor in the building is resurfaced.

All meetings that were scheduled to take place at The Center today and this evening are cancelled. The Center's staff and volunteers have apologized for the inconvenience and assure the community that these improvements are being done to make the facility a better space for everyone to enjoy.

On Thursday, LGBT nonprofits to raise money via #GiveOutDay

Nonprofits across the country - including two San Diego organizations - will encourage their supporters to contribute to them on Thursday, May 9 through a new online and Social Media initiative called "Give OUT Day." The program includes an online giving site being administered by Razoo.com making it very easy for potential donors to make a donation.

SAN DIEGO -- In just 18 days, our community will gather again in support of equality and justice to celebrate the life and work of Harvey Milk at the fifth annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast. With just a few weeks left, we are almost completely SOLD OUT.

This year we are excited to welcome two special guests to San Diego. Please join us to honor Former Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts with the Harvey Milk Lifetime Leadership Award and award-winning filmmaker Dustin Lance Black with the Harvey Milk Equality Award.

LGBT group at SDSU to be renamed Queer Student Union

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State University's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Student Union - also known by the acronym LGBTSU - will change its name to the Queer Student Union beginning in the 2013-14 school year.

Founded in 1975 as the Gay Student Union, the organization has served as a social, support, and educational group for the LGBT community on the SDSU campus for nearly 40 years. Over the years, the student club added additional letters to its acronym to give visibility to other groups, such as lesbian, bisexual and transgender.

New staffers join The Center's development team

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego LGBT Community Center has welcomed two new members to its development team this week. Brandon Tate is The Center's new development director, and Jeff Redondo will work as major gifts officer.

Both have experience working in the local LGBT community and in development.

Before joining The Center's team, Tate worked in development and major gifts roles at Equality California and the Environmental Health Coalition. Tate studied at Louisiana State University and San Diego State University.

TODAY: San Diegans to dine out in support of The Center's HIV/AIDS services

SAN DIEGO -- More than 100 restaurants, bars, and coffeehouses are participating in Dining Out For Life, an annual fundraiser in support the San Diego LGBT Community Center's HIV/AIDS services.

Participating venues pledge to donate at least 25% of the day's sales to the cause, making it very easy for diners to participate - all they have to do is show up and dine out!

The Center seeks additional volunteers for Dining Out For Life event

SAN DIEGO -- With Dining Out for Life San Diego rapidly approaching, volunteer coordinator Jerry Tomaszewicz is issuing a special plea for volunteers. Can you help?

"I need you. This year, we have more participating restaurants than ever before and we’ll need even more volunteers to ensure that this amazing event is as successful as possible," Jerry said. "If you have any ability to volunteer with us on Thursday, April 25, please contact me. We could really use your help!”

TONIGHT: Transgender Day of Empowerment celebration at The Center

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego's transgender community will host the tenth annual Transgender Day of Empowerment tonight from 6-9 pm at The Center.

Everyone is invited to the free celebration, which is designed to recognize outstanding individuals from the local transgender community as well as educate the public and celebrate the strides the community has made.

Tonight's event will include an awards ceremony, art, entertainment, and refreshments. A preview of the Visible Bodies photography exhibition will also be on display, in advance of its full showing at the "Art of Pride" next month.
