Dr. Delores Jacobs honored for commitment to public service

SAN DIEGO -- Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins has honored eight local woman - including Dr. Delores Jacobs of The San Diego LGBT Community Center - for their exemplary commitment to public service.

The women were honored at a reception in Atkin's San Diego district office.

THURSDAY: Food Truck Fierceness to kick off annual Dining Out For Life

SAN DIEGO -- As the community gears up for the annual Dining Out for Life event next month, The San Diego LGBT Community Center will host Food Truck Fierceness on Thursday, March 21 from 5-8 pm.

The Center's parking lot will be filled with some of San Diego's favorite food trucks, including Chop Soo-ey, Mad Mantis, Not So Fast!, Pearson's Cajun, Two For The Road and Burger Lounge. As participants dine and enjoy the various selections from the food trucks, they will be entertained by the "Dining Out Divas" who will keep the party pumping with "dragioke" and special performances.

Dining Out for Life volunteer orientations set

SAN DIEGO -- To help prepare for San Diego’s April 25 Dining Out for Life event, The San Diego LGBT Community Center has scheduled five separate volunteer orientations, starting Saturday, March 9 at 10 am.

Lesbian named to key job at Jewish Family Service

SAN DIEGO -- Dana Toppel has been named as Chief Program Officer at Jewish Family Service (JFS).

Toppel has been an instrumental part of the agency’s success since starting with Jewish Family Service nearly four years ago and most recently held the position of Divisional Director of Clinical and Educational Services.

Toni Atkins urges community to enroll in major cancer-prevention study

SAN DIEGO – California Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins is invited our community to change the future and defeat cancer by enrolling in a novel cancer prevention study.

Atkins made her appointment to enroll last week in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3), and urges others to follow her lead.

"The Glitteratti" to launch Saturday with benefit for The Center's Youth Housing Project

SAN DIEGO -- A group of friends - calling themselves "The Glitteratti" - have joined together to make a difference in the lives of people in need, and will host their first benefit event this Saturday, March 2 to benefit The Center's Youth Housing Project (YHP).

Event attendees are asked to bring gift cards in any denomination that can be used by YHP residents to purchase everyday items that they might not be able to afford otherwise.

COMMUNITY PROFILE: Meet Carlos "Charming" Salazar

SAN DIEGO -- Carlos "Charming" Salazar is new to San Diego's LGBT community but has brought with him a wealth of leadership experiences that can only be of benefit to the organizations he has joined.

At 25 years old, he is the CEO of Forward Thinking, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young adults. He is driven - volunteering his time for numerous boards, organizations and groups - and continues to do things to better himself and the communities around him.

COMMUNITY PROFILE: Meet John Greenwell, a tireless volunteer working to make a better world

SAN DIEGO -- John Greenwell says that volunteering and giving back nurture his soul. As such, he participates in numerous organizations both in and out of the LGBT community that help those in need.

The 33-year-old seems to never have a day off. If he's not working, he's participating in a community service project, or in meetings helping to plan ways to make the world a better place, or learning how to be a better leader. As a schoolteacher, Greenwell is also able to instill his sense of service in the students whose lives he touches everyday.

Young Professionals Council to host a Date with Equality

SAN DIEGO -- The Young Professionals Council (YPC) of The San Diego LGBT Community Center invite you to a "Date with Equality" on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 6-8 pm at Heat Bar & Kitchen.

At the event, guests will mix and mingle with LGBT and allied young professionals and community leaders at YPC's February social. The evening will include food, drinks, networking and fun.

YPC is a diverse group of young LGBT professionals and allies, dedicated to the preservation and future growth of The San Diego LGBT Community Center.
