The Center receives $25,000 Verizon grant to raise awareness of intimate partner violence

SAN DIEGO -- Increased awareness of partner violence within the LGBT community and the resources available to cope with the issue are at the forefront of a $25,000 Verizon grant awarded to The San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center in Hillcrest.

The Center's Community Coalition Breakfast to feature Toni Atkins and Todd Gloria

SAN DIEGO -- The next Community Coalition Breakfast at The San Diego LGBT Community Center will feature presentations by State Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins and San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria, both members of the LGBT community.

The event will be held Friday, Jan. 11, from 7:30 to 9 am.

At the breakfast, Atkins and Gloria will discuss their visions and plans for governing in the upcoming year. The event will provide an opportunity to discuss and better understand upcoming legislative priorities for the LGBT community and more.

Profiles in Advocacy: Truax Award winner Teresa Oyos

December 2012 brings me full circle as I complete the first year of Profiles in Advocacy, returning to the topic that started it all, the current A. Brad Truax award recipient. I am thrilled that this year’s honoree is both a friend and colleague at University of California, San Diego (UCSD): Teresa Oyos of the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Program (HNRP) housed on UCSD’s Hillcrest campus.

Annual Truax Awards ceremony honors individuals, groups working in HIV/AIDS services

Teresa Oyos won this year’s top honors at the Dr. A. Brad Truax Award ceremony held on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1. The annual reception honors local individuals and organizations working to improve the lives of those affected by HIV and AIDS.

Currently a senior staff member in the University of California, San Diego HIV Neurobehavioral Research Program (HNRP), Oyos has been working in HIV and AIDS service organizations for over 24 years.

The Center to host annual "Come Home for the Holidays" celebration

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego LGBT Community Center will host its annual "Come Home for the Holidays" celebration on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 5-8 pm. The event is organized to bring together the diverse cultures and traditions that make up San Diego's LGBT community.

The free event is family-friendly and open to all. It will include music, food, dancing, a secular candle lighting ceremony, a Native American blessing, and a chance to meet others in the community.

San Diego Pride grants over $85,000 to LGBT groups

Jim Winsor’s Out & About: Martinis Above Fourth reprises Charity Wreath Auction this Monday

This week Martinis Above Fourth owners Jim Simpson and Doru Tifui will once again be hosting one of the biggest community charity events of the year.

The ninth annual Charity Wreath Auction is a benefit for the Eddie Conlon Youth Fund, which provides school supplies, scholarships and housing for LGBT youth, some of whom have been turned away by their families.

San Diego Pride to host annual public meeting on Dec. 4

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Pride, the organizers of San Diego's annual LGBT pride festivities, will host its annual meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

The community is invited to attend the meeting to hear San Diego Pride's board, staff and volunteers as they share the organization's 2012 report. There will also be announcement about Pride's 2012 grant giving.

Bob Filner inauguration, celebrations set for Dec. 3

SAN DIEGO – Mayor-elect Bob Filner has a full day planned for Monday, Dec. 3, when he will attend his inauguration ceremony and celebrate his election victory by thanking his supporters at five stops across San Diego.

The day will start with Filner’s inauguration ceremony at 10 am at Balboa Park Club, 2144 Pan American Road West in San Diego. The inauguration is open to the public and does not require an RSVP. A reception will follow the ceremony.

First round of LGBT veterans to be inducted onto San Diego wall of honor

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego LGBT Community Center will induct the first set of LGBT veterans to the Benjamin F. Dillingham and Bridge Wilson Wall of Honor at a ceremony on Friday, Nov. 9 at 6 pm.

The wall was unveiled last November.
