“Bears Care” rummage sale Aug. 11 to benefit HIV/AIDS services

SAN DIEGO -- Bears San Diego and Mr. Bear 2012 Chuck Houghton will present the “Bears Care” rummage sale in August in Hillcrest.

The rummage sale will take place from 9 am to 4 pm Saturday, Aug. 11, in the auditorium at The San Diego LGBT Community Center, 3909 Centre St. at Harvey Milk Street in San Diego, CA 92103.

This is a fundraiser to benefit HIV/AIDS support services through Family Health Centers of San Diego, Special Delivery San Diego and The Center.

In addition to the massive rummage sale, there will also be food for sale and a chance to win a San Diego Harbor cruise.

Planning begins for 5th annual San Diego Remembers Matthew Shepard event

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Remembers is gearing up to plan its fifth annual remembrance of Matthew Shepard, the young gay man who was killed in 1998 because he was gay.

The group began organizing the yearly march and vigil in 2008 to mark the 10th anniversary of Shepard's death out of concern that the horrendous crime was slipping from the public's memory. Organizers hope that by remembering Shepard and others who have been victim of hate violence, community members will be inspired to get involved with organizations and initiatives to stand up against hate.

AIDS Walk & Run San Diego schedules team leader workshops

SAN DIEGO -- Now that San Diego Pride has passed, many in the community begin their plans for participation in the annual AIDS Walk & Run San Diego, which is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 30.

Registration is open and organizers encourage organizations, businesses, groups of friends and others to form teams for the event, which raises money for local HIV/AIDS service providers.

SDG&E donates $7,500 to Hillcrest Youth Center

SAN DIEGO -- SDG&E has donated $7,500 to support of youth leadership development at Hillcrest Youth Center, The San Diego LGBT Community Center said today.

"We are tremendously fortunate to have SDG&E’s support for The Center’s Hillcrest Youth Center," said Christopher Mills, director of major gifts. "Hillcrest Youth Center fills a critical need for LGBTQ youth throughout San Diego County thanks to amazing corporate sponsors like SDG&E. Generous grants like this one help make our work possible, and we are greatly appreciative of their support."

"Throw Down For A Cause" to raise money for San Diego LGBT youth services

SAN DIEGO -- The next "Throw Down For A Cause" women's Jell-O wrestling fundraiser will be held Wednesday, July 18, at Bourbon Street to raise funds for The San Diego LGBT Community Center and Project Love Out Loud's youth services.

The event was created in 2009 by a group of friends and associates who wanted to do something to create a positive impact in their community. A committee was formed, and the group decided that supporting LGBT youth in San Diego was an issue they wanted to support.

The Center's Young Professionals Council to host community champagne brunch

SAN DIEGO -- The Young Professionals Council (YPC) of the San Diego LGBT Community Center will host their first champagne brunch to celebrate the inaugural graduating class of the YPC Academy.

The event will be held Sunday, July 1, from 11 am to 1 pm at Wang's North Park, and include food, mimosas and the company of a group of San Diego's upcoming community leaders.

Volunteers needed to register "Equality Voters" at San Diego Pride Parade

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego LGBT Community Center and San Diego LGBT Pride are teaming up to make sure that as many Equality Voters as possible are registered to vote during the setup for the Pride Parade on Saturday, July 21.

Volunteers are needed to help with this, and free passes to the pride festival will be given to everyone who completes a shift.

Participants will be required to attend a brief training session in July. Those who have prior experience with voter registration or canvassing work, should consider becoming a Team Captain, who will be in charge of their own team.

San Diego Human Dignity Foundation brings together past and present supporters

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation launched a new spring event on Saturday, June 9, reuniting the organization’s past and present founders, donors and board members in order to acknowledge several community recipients of the foundation’s philanthropy. Called the Reunion Party, the event was celebrating the organization’s 16 years of philanthropy and was held at a private residence in Mission Hills.

San Diego Democrats for Equality to meet June 28

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Democrats for Equality will hold its next general meeting on Thursday, June 28, and discuss a number of topics related to the primary election held June 5.

Craig Roberts, the club's vice president for political action, will lead a discussion about possible endorsements in races that were not settled in the primary election, including the 79th Assembly district; 51st congressional district; and Superior Court Judge Office 25.
