Equality California to honor Vincent Pompei at San Diego ceremony

SAN DIEGO -- Vincent Pompei has been named the State Farm Good Neighbor Award honoree for the San Diego Equality Awards on June 1, presented by Equality California.

Pompei is the project director for the Center for Excellence in School Counseling and Leadership, and the chair for the only national educator conference focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth. He is currently a full time doctoral candidate at San Diego State University and is a former middle school and high school teacher.

Family of Jamey Rodemeyer: Three voices making a difference

SAN DIEGO -- The family of Jamey Rodemeyer spoke at the final day of the San Diego CESCaL conference, highlighting a weekend focus on supplying educators with tools to address the needs of LGBT and questioning youth. Rodemeyer was 14 years old when he committed suicide in 2011, due in part to being bullied for his sexuality.

His parents Tim and Tracy Rodemeyer spoke following their daughter, and Jamey Rodemeyer’s sister, Alyssa. The three have become a team of advocates, traveling the United States to tell their family story and raise awareness of bullying.

Over 600 educators empowered at CESCaL conference

This year’s fourth annual national educator conference focused on LGBTQIA youth may have been packed with celebrity honorees, but it was the 600 educators, school counselors and national LGBT leaders in attendance that were the real heroes of the weekend.

Supporting Students ~ Saving Lives is presented each year by San Diego State University's Center for Excellence in School Counseling and Leadership (CESCaL) and brings together educators from across the country to network, learn, and share resources. The conference is known to be the only event of its type focused on LGBTQIA youth.

SAN DIEGO -- Registration is now open for the fourth annual national educator conference focused on LGBTQIA youth - Supporting Students ~ Saving Lives - presented by San Diego State University's Center for Excellence in School Counseling and Leadership (CESCaL).

The conference is scheduled for Feb. 15-17, 2013.

Taking place each year in San Diego, the conference will welcome K-12 educators from across the nation to participate in a series of workshops, discussions, activities, networking, and social events to learn how to better deal with issues related to LGBTQIA youth.

Fundraiser and book signing to benefit CESCaL educators conference

SAN DIEGO -- To raise money for the only annual national educator conference focused on LGBTQ youth - Supporting Students ~ Saving Lives - a fundraiser and book release party will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, at the At HOM store in Little Italy.

Event organizers hope that community members will come out and support the fundraiser, especially in light of the startling statistics:

- Nine out of 10 LGBT students are harassed at school.

- LGBT students are 4 times more likely to attempt suicide.

- LGBTQ students have a dropout rate three times the national average.
