Illinois House committee approves marriage equality bill; measure advances to final hurdle

SPRINGFIELD — Marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples is even closer to becoming the law of the land in Illinois.

The Illinois House Executive Committee voted 6-5 to approve a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage Tuesday, setting the stage for the its final showdown in the full House chamber, the bill’s last hurdle before potentially becoming law.

“This is a wonderful moment for the State of Illinois,” said Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago), the bill’s chief sponsor in the House, moments after the committee victory.

Round 2: Illinois lawmakers to reintroduce same-sex marriage bill today

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The chief sponsors of legislation in that would legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois plan to reintroduce the bill today shortly after the start of the 98th General Assembly, according to one of its chief sponsors.

Sen. Heather Steans, a Chicago Democrat and the bill’s chief sponsor in the Senate, said Tuesday the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, will be simultaneously introduced in both the House and the Senate shortly after newly-elected lawmakers are sworn in to the legislature.

Vote on Illinois gay marriage delayed until next week

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Senate Democrats of the Illinois General Assembly have confirmed that a bill carrying legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage will not be heard this week and will likely be picked up for consideration next week.

The Senate Executive Committee will still consider the measure Thursday, despite the meeting having been delayed several hours.

The Democrats issued a statement following increasing uncertainty around a potential vote on the measure due to senators who are absent for family emergencies, and later said it will be heard next week.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Activists and lawmakers backing legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois are regrouping and recounting potential “yes” votes in the Illinois Senate after key members of the chamber reportedly said they will be absent from Thursday’s proceedings in the General Assembly’s lame duck session.

At least two senators — and possibly three — have been called away from Springfield due to family emergencies, according to sources on the ground at the statehouse, who wished not to name the lawmakers.

Anti-gay religious groups launch coalition opposing Illinois marriage equality

As lawmakers prepare to bring same-sex marriage legislation up for vote in the Illinois General Assembly early next month, a group of conservative religious organizations have formed a coalition against the bill.

Illinois advocacy group launches transgender rights initiative

The Civil Rights Agenda, a Chicago-based LGBT rights and policy advocacy group, announced Sunday the launch of a new project that will bring greater focus to advancing the rights of transgender and gender-variant communities in Illinois.

“We at The Civil Rights Agenda believe that we are at a tipping point in terms of transgender rights,” stated Anthony Martinez, executive director of TCRA. “It is our belief that we should push the rights of transgender individuals to the forefront of the LGBTQ policy agenda in Illinois.”

Poll: More Illinoisans support same-sex marriage than two years ago

Support for same-sex marriage equality among Illinoisans has grown by 10 points over the last two years, according to a poll conducted by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University.

“I think the numbers show striking shifts in public opinion,” said Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago). Harris is a longtime proponent of marriage equality in Illinois and has spearheaded several bills in the legislature to achieve marriage equality rights, including the successful civil unions bill in 2010.
