Repairs to iconic Museum of Man dome at Balboa Park in progress to preserve history, not alter it

SAN DIEGO -- The iconic dome at the San Diego Museum of Man in Balboa Park is currently undergoing repairs and the City-funded project is taking serious measures to ensure the historical preservation of the building throughout construction.

The scaffolding 150 feet above Balboa Park is part of the San Diego Museum of Man Roofing Project, spearheaded by the City of San Diego and project manager George Freiha.

Freiha and his project team explained the major repairs include new roofing on the Museum of Man, repairs to the main and smaller corner domes and window restoration.

VIDEOS: Imperial Court royalty faces deportation

SAN DIEGO – Community activist Allan Spyere has been detained by U.S. customs officials after being arrested on a DUI charge last weekend.

Sypere, a Brazilian native who currently serves as the Emperor of the Imperial Court de San Diego, was booked into San Diego County Jail at 3:42 am Sunday, Feb. 5. He was charged with a DUI and then found to be in the United States on an expired J1 student visa, which led him to being detained by Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to public records.

Uptown Planners give green light to Hillcrest Pride Flag project

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego’s LGBT community had a lot to celebrate Tuesday night after a local planning group approved a proposal to install a large flag pole in Hillcrest that will fly a rainbow flag year round, on the same day the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a ruling that denying same-sex couples the right to marry is unconstitutional.

As a progressive I believe San Diego is on the cusp of one of the most important civil-rights moments ever to occur in San Diego, the election of a gay mayor.

As an individual who is personally dedicated to the cause of equality, I cannot help but be overwhelmed at the possibility that San Diego could become a leader in the nation for a standard of quality that can be set in city government regardless of a mayor's sexual orientation.

How did Councilmember Todd Gloria spend his discretionary city funds?

SAN DIEGO -- Three facilities in City Council District 3 will see improvements thanks to an influx in funding allocated to them through the city's Community Projects, Programs and Services (CPPS) funds.

District 3 Councilmember Todd Gloria approved the allocation of more than $34,000, which will benefit the Balboa Park Activity Center, and the Adams Avenue and Golden Hill recreation centers.

ACTION ALERT: Community members encouraged to speak out in favor of Hillcrest Pride Flag project

SAN DIEGO – The Uptown Planners will make a recommendation on the Hillcrest Pride Flag project at its meeting at 6pm Tuesday, Feb. 7.

The board provides advisory recommendations to the City of San Diego regarding land use and projects in the Uptown Community Plan area, which includes most of the Hillcrest, Mission Hills, Bankers Hill and Park West neighborhoods.
