COMMENTARY: If we bully our way to the top, do we win?

Have we as a people become so jaded with our government that we have lost what little compassion we once had for the people who actually live in this country? I only ask because I wonder if we have lost sight of who we are – fundamentally – as a people. I’m asking” Who are we?

COMMENTARY: Another tackle in the world of homophobic sports

Another former professional athlete has came out last month — 6-foot-7 Jamaican-born NFL offensive tackle Kwame Harris.

With news of LGBT equality in the news daily, one may wonder why this is news at all. But it is. The world of sports is quickly becoming the last closet, where gays and lesbians hide their sexual orientation. In a homophobic testosterone-driven sport, like American football, Harris concealment is understandable.

COMMENTARY: Fifty shades of red

The Huffington Post put the map, seen at the right, on its Facebook page on March 29, 2013.

Each area of red on the map shows where someone changed their Facebook profile picture to the Human Rights Campaign’s red symbol for equality. More than 2.7 million Facebook users changed their profile picture on Tuesday, March 26, according to Facebook statistics.

What struck when I looked at this map was the correlation of where the sparseness of red is on the map of red equality signs and where the red is on the map of the slave states, shown on the far left.

COMMENTARY: “Hey world, I am what I am”

Today is Tuesday, March 26, and by the time most of you read this, the Supreme Court justices will have heard oral arguments on the constitutionality of Proposition 8, which is a voter-approved initiative that banned same-sex marriage in California.

On Wednesday, March 27, the justices will hear oral arguments on the federal Defense Of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage in the United States of America as between one man and one woman.

Before any of these decisions even take place -– by the end of June -- I want to remind each and every one of us who we are.

COMMENTARY: How we got to the Supreme Court

Twenty years ago this July, I went to Hawaii to cover the lawsuit that launched the first salvo in the current war over marriage equality, ultimately leading to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), Proposition 8 and, this week, arguments before the Supreme Court: Several gay and lesbian couples took the then-extraordinary step of suing the state of Hawaii, claiming gender discrimination because they were denied marriage licenses. The case crashed like a tsunami across the mainland.

COMMENTARY: Teach your children well

In light of the Steubenville rape trial verdict, I’m wondering when it is we tell our children the cautionary tales about alcohol? Is it:

• While we’re sitting around a holiday table with our glasses full of wine?

• While we’re watching a professional baseball game with a bottle of beer in our hands?

• While we’re barbecuing with a six-pack on ice sitting at the ready beside the grill?

• While we’re mixing cocktails in preparation for an outdoor concert?

• While we’re getting dressed for a night of bar hopping?

COMMENTARY: Politicians seek to "double dip" at City Hall

City politicians already have voted themselves the richest pension benefits of any city employees, but under a new proposal by Mayor Bob Filner, city politicians will have even more to look forward to once they leave office.

Mayor Filner is asking the City Council to pass an extraordinary law this month to allow former city politicians to "Double Dip" by collecting full city pensions while being eligible to be rehired by the city with full salaries simultaneously.

COMMENTARY: If you yell all the time, no one will listen

This is a crazy world we live in. People are quick to judge and quick to tell you exactly what is wrong with your life.

The gay community has fought for decades for fair and equal treatment under the law. We want to be treated with respect and have our voices be heard in a world than somehow seems to only hear what it considers to be normal - although what is normal is really up for debate.

COMMENTARY: Was Marco Millian killed in Mississippi because he was black or gay?

(Editor's note: Today, the FBI announced that it would investigate the murder of Marco McMillian.)

Marco McMillian was a trailblazer, and the pride of the Mississippi Delta.

Just in his 20s, Ebony magazine in 2004 hailed him as on the nation's 30 leaders under the age of 30. And in his 30s, the Mississippi Business Journal hailed him as one of the "Top 40 Leaders under 40."

But at age 34, McMillian's life was mysteriously cut short.

Commentary: Voting rights, gay rights, women’s rights ... the beat goes on

One wouldn't think that the fight for the right to vote would really exist in the United States of America in the year 2013, would one?
