COMMENTARY: “So This Is Christmas”

So this is Christmas
And what have you done

The words to this John Lennon song, "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)," have kept repeating over and over in my head the past few weeks. I just keep thinking: “And just what have I done?”

I’m not a big fan of the holiday season. I’m not a cynic. I just find it all overwhelming. I find buying presents for people because I have to and not because I want to, irritating. Spending time with family can be quite joyful, but it can also be stressful and wrought with emotions – good and bad.

COMMENTARY: America's problem, young white men in crisis

The most recent massacre, the one at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, took the lives of 6- and 7-year-olds. It has shaken our nation to its core.

The enormity of this devastation is incalculable. There are the small coffins of the victims killed during a holiday season at a tender age. It is also the death of the safety of a Norman Rockwellian. We now know that none are safe.

COMMENTARY: Visit to an "insane asylum" proves to be life-altering

The middle-aged woman, her wrinkled face twisted in rage, screamed words at us that made no sense. Her disheveled appearance was shocking enough, but the conditions she was living in were even more appalling.

Down the dark and dank hallway, we stopped to gaze at a grizzled old man, missing most of his teeth, who stared intently at a spot on a wall. It was bare. He was looking at nothing in particular and he appeared completely unaware of his whereabouts or the fact that a busload of college-preparatory high school seniors were standing nearby.

COMMENTARY: Another "Christian" myth - the “war on Christmas”

Here in the United States of America we are supposed to have Freedom of Religion. But I ask you: How can we have freedom of religion without having freedom from religion? How can you have the freedom to practice your personal religious beliefs if you must adhere to governmental laws that are based on the beliefs of any one religion?

The whole Christmas, Virgin Mary, Baby Jesus, Three Wise Men, no room at the inn, manger in a stable, star in the East thing is all about the Christians. This is their tale, their “shining star,” so to speak.

COMMENTARY: Hate, shoot, mourn

Perhaps you hate President Obama

Because he won re-election
Because he’s a Democrat
Because he’s Black

Because he supports same-sex marriage
Because he organized to fight prejudice
Because he lived in Chicago

Because he initiated heathcare reform
Because he sometimes compromises
Because he sometimes doesn’t

Because he hesitates when he speaks
Because he’s weak on some issues
Because he’s strong on others

COMMENTARY: The Supreme Court, Prop 8, DOMA and the gun-toting "Christians"

My partner Susan asked me this morning what I thought about the U.S. Supreme Court hearing the DOMA and Prop 8 cases. I just shrugged and said: “I’ll wait until they rule.”

For me to even say anything about what I believe will happen would just be pure speculation. Who even knows what lies in the minds of these Supreme Court justices? It is, after all, the Supreme Court and we all know that in some cases they aren’t doling out any sort of justice.

COMMENTARY: Myths about homosexuality fuel Uganda's "Kill The Gays" bill

This week, as we are waiting for the Ugandan parliament to debate whether or not homosexuality should be punishable by death (or at the very least life in jail) it might be helpful to review whatever could make anyone reach such a murderous conclusion.

COMMENTARY: I knew I wasn’t straight when …

I read an article this week that asked the question: “When did you know you weren’t straight?”

For as long as I can remember – that’s how long I knew I wasn’t straight. Now – if you were to ask me when did I finally admit it and start living openly as a lesbian? Well now – that would be the age of 50 – ten years ago.

COMMENTARY: Here come the holidays

It’s that time of year when people will sleep in tents for days just to get a video game console, walk over a fallen shopper to get a television, or spend money they don’t have on things they don’t need, just because there’s a sale.

It’s the time of layaway, extended credit and no money down. It’s no finance charge and open 24 hours.
