COMMENTARY: Romney-Ryan asks, "Are you better off?"

I’m sitting in a kayak, staring at a beautiful seascape along the Downeast coast of Maine, wondering if the fabulous seaweed-adorned rock before me might metamorphous into something equally fabulous and more inclined toward sharing sea stories.

That would be cool.

But the rock doesn’t sprout even one magical toe. I contemplate the inanimate thing, still hopeful, and lo and behold the Romney-Ryan campaign visage comes to mind!

That is annoying — right in the middle of my fanciful tranquility.

COMMENTARY: Paul Ryan swaps unborn babies for vice presidency

Less than two weeks after joining Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign as the GOP’s presumptive vice presidential candidate, U.S. Congressman Paul Ryan has publicly confirmed his erstwhile inner opportunist.

Ryan, who is “very proud of [his] pro-life record,” was faced with a choice between the dangling prize of the vice presidency and remaining true to the source of his pridefulness. Lo and behold, Ryan is surprisingly pro-choice, albeit in a 1-percent sort of way.

COMMENTARY: Nothing new in GOP’s anti-woman, anti-gay platform

The GOP's anti-abortion platform hasn't changed — it is identical to that of its 2008 platform, allowing abortions only in cases of rape and incest.

The GOP's anti-gay platform also hasn't changed — it is identical to that of its 2008 platform, allowing marriage only between a man and a woman.

The Grand Old Party’s future, which includes a younger generation of social conservative and LGBTQ voices, depends on its ability to have open discussions about abortion, reproductive coercion and gay rights.

COMMENTARY: My being gay is not my opinion – it’s my life

I’ve been asked numerous times why I write so much about gay issues. Why can’t I just let things go? Why can’t I just let others have their opinions? Why must I protest and tell people not to shop at certain stores? Why do I think my opinion is right?

To be clear; it’s not my opinion, it’s my life. I think if we all understood this, we would understand why it is I write about issues that affect my life.

COMMENTARY: At 42, Paul Ryan is out-of-step with his generation

On paper, you’d think a 42-year-old Republican would be up to speed on marriage rights, and might even, given his age, be tolerant.

To my surprise, Mitt Romney's vice presidential pick, U.S. Congressman Paul D. Ryan from Wisconsin, is not only no ally to our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) communities — he’s completely ignorant of our struggle.

When it comes to the issue of marriage equality, Ryan has consistently voted it down.

In defending his stalwart stance for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage Ryan stated:

COMMENTARY: I think therefore I'm finished

There is a nice little pool outside my office door. I recall thinking late one night that the thing would kill me before it ever became a reality. My excavated yard had metamorphosed into a mud pit, transformed by a malevolent deluge, and I was down, sinking into the sucking miasma, my flashlight lifted to the heavens, that my corpse might be found in the morning’s muck.

Turns out, all I had to do was sit up: The mud was barely a foot deep.

COMMENTARY: Can my "gay community" please stop whining about Sally Ride?

For those in my gay community whining about all the good Sally Ride could have done had she only “come out;” I say — Get over yourself.

For most gays and lesbians, the hardest thing we will ever do in our lives is “come out.” It’s personal, and absolutely no one can dictate to you the time, day, or moment you have to come out. It’s a scary straight world, full of hate, anger, bigotry, ignorance, and people who want to do nothing more than make a mockery of your life.

COMMENTARY: Is awareness of HIV enough?

July is National HIV Awareness Month. Increasing awareness is one of those concepts that has a nice noncontroversial quality, and there are all manner of things happening to that end.
