ALBANY, N.Y — Two New York City state lawmakers on Friday introduced a bill that seeks to ban the controversial practice of gay-to-straight “conversion” therapy, also known as reparative therapy.

NEW YORK -- The fight against a controversial therapy that purports to "cure" gay people of their gayness and make them straight has come to New York.

The therapy has been around for decades, but has come under increased scrutiny in the last few years as gay rights supporters have argued it doesn't work and may cause great harm to those who undergo it. Over the past several years, the entire mainstream mental health community has renounced it, and politicians in several states have taken steps to restrict it.

"Ex-gay movement" poster boy John Paulk renounces conversion therapy, apologizes

PORTLAND, Ore. – John Paulk, the poster boy for the so-called “ex-gay movement” for a decade, has issued “A Formal Public Apology by John Paulk” and renounced conversion therapy.

Paulk founded the Love Won Out ministry through the anti-gay group Focus on Family, appeared on countless television shows and conducted numerous interviews touting that he was converted into a heterosexual man through prayer and “ex-gay therapy.”

He married an “ex-lesbian,” Anne, and they became parents of three children.

Ninth Circuit panel to hear appeal of California law banning "ex-gay therapy"

SAN FRANCISCO – The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals today will hear the challenge to California’s law that bans “ex-gay therapy” for minors.

Senate Bill 1172 was signed into law last fall by Gov. Jerry Brown, who praised the measure for protecting LGBT young people from dangerous practices called conversion therapy and reparative therapy. The therapy uses shame, verbal abuse and same-sex aversion techniques, and the success rate is considered nil.

PHOENIX — Matt R. Salmon, the gay son of U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.), says it’s hard for him to understand why people “jump to the conclusion” that his father is anti-gay.

“Yeah, he doesn’t support gay marriage, but that doesn’t make him a bigot at all,” the younger Salmon told KPNX-TV in Phoenix.

Judge temporarily blocks California's ban on reparative therapy for minors

A federal judge in California on Monday issued a temporary injunction on the state's ban on controverial gay-to-straight "conversion" therapy, but limited the scope of his order to just the three providers who have appealed the ban.

U.S. District Judge William Shubb ruled that the ban Gov. Jerry Brown signed earlier this year could offend the ruling that the First Amendment rights of psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals who engage in “reparative” or “conversion” therapy.
