EQCA and NCLR move to defend law protecting LGBT youth from reparative therapy

SAN FRANCISCO -- Late Friday, the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson filed court papers seeking to intervene in a federal lawsuit challenging the new California law protecting LGBT young people from dangerous and potentially deadly psychological abuse.

CALIFORNIA BANS 'EX-GAY' THERAPY

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California Gov. Jerry Brown made history late Saturday night by signing a landmark bill that will protect LGBT youth from psychological abuse by deceitful mental health professionals who falsely claim to be able to change their sexual orientation or gender expression.

50,000 people urge California Gov. Brown to sign bill banning "ex-gay" therapy

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Momentum is building in California and across the country to put an end to dangerous efforts designed to change a young person’s sexual orientation or gender expression that have proven to inflict great emotional harm and have resulted in suicide.

California Gov. Jerry Brown can sign Senate Bill 1172, a bill to protect young people from this abuse by prohibiting therapists from using these discredited practices.

To date, nearly 50,000 concerned citizens have signed a Human Rights Campaign petition urging the Governor to sign the bill.

Courage Campaign hosts second annual Spirit of Courage Awards

LOS ANGELES -- The Courage Campaign will honor four individuals for their support of the LGBT community at the second annual Spirit of Courage Awards, to be held Sept. 20 at the Petersen Automotive Museum.

Honorees include Toronto Maple Leafs President Brian Burke; his son Patrick Burke of the Philadelphia Flyers; and California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris.

ACTION ALERT: Landmark California bill to ban "ex-gay therapy" nears final passage

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California Assembly today voted 52-21 in favor of a bill that will protect LGBT youth from dangerous and abusive treatments by mental health practitioners who falsely claim to be able to change their sexual orientation or gender expression.

Authored by state Sen. Ted Lieu, Senate Bill 1172 is co-sponsored by Equality California, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Gaylesta, Mental Health America of Northern California, Lambda Legal and the Courage Campaign.
