Editor's Note: San Diego Gay & Lesbian News is pleased to welcome back Stephen Brewer, MA, after a long hiatus while he completed his dissertation. We proposed DADT to Stephen as a topic to explore in his come-back column, and as a result, he conducted several in-person interviews and transcribed the responses, all from career military servicemen, about their feelings regarding the upcoming repeal. Watch for future columns where Stephen takes on more hot topics in LGBT news.

U.S. asks appeals court to kill Log Cabin Republicans lawsuit challenging DADT ban

PASADENA, Calif. -- With the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" less than three weeks away, the Obama administration asked a federal appeals court Thursday to discard the lawsuit challenging the ban on openly gay and lesbian servicemembers and a judge's ruling that declared it unconstitutional.

"Once 'don't ask, don't tell' has been ended in 19 days, that is the end of this case, and there's nothing for this court to do," Justice Department lawyer Henry Whitaker told the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which held the hearing in Pasadena.

Editor's note: On Sept. 20, 2011, the longstanding ban on gays and lesbians serving openly (or being discharged, regardless, if found out) in the U.S. military will finally be repealed, thanks to President Barack Obama's pen last December, and after the dogged support of Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, then-Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and senators and Congressmembers on both sides of the aisle.

Colonel Cammermeyer on DADT: A promise and redemption

Today I had the esteem pleasure of sitting in on a White House conference call about the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT). Much is being said about who were the “key players” and how this got done, but in all honesty, it was President Obama who said he was going to repeal DADT and he kept his word.

As I sat to write this article, I thought about a Colonel who knew all too well the pain of revealing who she was and then being told after a decorated service to our country that her service was no longer needed because of her sexual orientation and her honesty.
