Get a LIFE: The health benefits of yoga

Last week we discussed what yoga is and explored some of the various traditions and offerings found in the yoga world.

Yet, irrespective of the style, yoga carries with it health benefits that are sparking curiosity.

What can yoga do for you?

1. Deeper Breathing: The breath is one of the primary ways to remove unneeded waste from the body. Through yoga you can stretch out your lung tissue, and increase the amount of oxygen you take in and the CO2 the body takes out with every exhale.

Get a LIFE: What is yoga?

With yoga studios on every corner it is important to get a better understanding of why this ancient tradition is captivating the modern world and spreading like wildfire.

Yoga encompasses much more than simply a movement practice. At its core it invites us to build greater awareness not only of our body, but also of our breath, mind/emotions, and intuitive capabilities.

The practice of ‘hatha’ yoga is the most well known, as it encompasses an inquiry into the aforementioned windows of awareness through the instrument of the body.

Get a LIFE: Are you a sun lover?

Having grown up in Israel, the sun has been a friend for many years. After living in the East Coast for seven years, I am extremely happy to be back in the land of sunshine.

Over Memorial Day Weekend, a friend took me up to Laguna Beach to experience the joys of tight swim trunks, laughter, and playful frolicking in the sun.

From drag queens in patriotic attire -- to a group of men turned professional cheerleaders throwing one another up in the air -- fun was everywhere.

Get a LIFE: Got stress? Try breathing an "ocean-breath"

One of the mantras I love to live by is that the simple things often make the most potent difference in life.

I have found this teaching to be true in my world through my waking morning rituals, one-on-one connection with friends, or the ability to take one tiny step towards a larger goal.

Even with the tools that yoga and holistic health and nutrition have offered me, stress is still a reality in my life.

To-do lists, errands, projects, cooking, keeping in touch, managing finances, and running a personal business, all take their toll.

Get a LIFE: Easy

The other day I went for a run on the beach.

In my usual fashion, I eventually moved into a pulse between a medium pace of motion and a slower stroll, to let my heart and breath catch up.

On one of my slower segments, I looked up at the rich blue sky and saw a soaring pelican, literally floating in thin air.

It was breathtaking.

Its wings didn't flap at all, yet it was being held up in the vastness of the sky while still moving forward.

I thought to myself, what if life was meant to be easy?

Get a LIFE: Sprout into Spring

Yesterday I got my first delivery of fruits and veggies from a nearby farm.

I felt excitement and glee -- like opening birthday gifts -- as I pulled out the treasures inside the bag.

In one small container there was a delicate bed of beautiful, fresh, green sprouts.

Even though I have always heard about the benefits of these tender creatures, for some reason they have never become a regular part of my weekly eating pattern.

Get a LIFE: India for your health, Part II

Travelling in India does include with it the risk of getting ‘Delhi Belly’, or a mosquito bite that could turn into an unfriendly affair (mostly during monsoon months), or even an unforeseen injury from a stray dog.

The risk for encountering violence however is a rare event.

Considering the fact that India’s population is over a billion, traffic is everywhere, and noise abounds, there is a much smaller proportion of anger and violence when compared to Western countries.

Kindness seems to be a value that is extremely present in Indian society.

Get a LIFE: India for your health

I am very very grateful for the life I lead.

From mid-March to mid April, I had the privilege of leading a yoga teacher-training in South India.

Travelling is always something that brightens my world and allows me to open up and remember that the human experience is not characterized by only my life.

India is a vast land with a rich and vibrant culture which always holds many lessons that help me lead a healthier life.

Odd and ironic how a developing nation that struggles with pollution, garbage, and poverty, is such a platform for many interesting contemplations.

Get a LIFE: Enjoy healthy fish

As a young man, when fish was in a meal equation, I would want to run far far away. The smell and taste were not huge motivators.

Luckily, my taste buds have shifted and fish are now a regular part of my eating routine.

Fish have a plethora of health benefits, including Omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, and vitamin D.

As usual, not all fish are equal in quality and taste.

There are many farmed fish on the market that are given chemicals to color their meat, fed antibiotics, and pellets of chicken feces, as well as corn and soy.

Get a LIFE: Beauty minerals -- Part II

Last week be began to explore what minerals your body needs to stay bright and beautiful on the inside, and consequently also on the outside.

Silicon and sulfur began our journey, yet there are three more potent minerals we need for consistent radiance.

Zinc acts through 25 enzymatic processes involved in digestion and metabolism.

It nourishes and assists with skin beauty, cell and bodily development, repair and growth, sexual development, and aids the lymph and liver in eliminating waste efficiently.
