11 state Democratic Party chairs support marriage equality plank in national platform

WASHINGTON – Eleven state Democratic Party chairs from across the country, including from California and Texas, joined in support of a marriage equality plank in the party’s national platform.

The chairs include John Burton of California, Joan Wagnon of Kansas, John Walsh of Massachusetts, Ken Martin of Minnesota, Jon Wisniewski of New Jersey, Jay Jacobs of New York, Meredith Wood Smith of Oregon, Boyd Richie of Texas, Jake Perkinson of Vermont, Dwight Pelz of Washington and Mike Tate of Wisconsin.

Charles McKain, pioneer in San Diego LGBT politics, dies at age 65

SAN DIEGO -- Considered by some to be a "pioneer" in San Diego LGBT politics, Charles McKain ("Charlie") died Saturday, March 17. He was 65 years old.

McKain retired as a staff attorney for the Fourth District of the California Court of Appeal. He graduated from Hoover High School in 1963, and went on to earn a history degree from Stanford University and Juris Doctorate from the UCLA School of Law. He was an active member in many local Democratic Clubs, and served on the board of the San Diego Democratic Club, now known as San Diego Democrats for Equality, for many years.

Freedom to Marry launches effort for marriage plank in 2012 Democratic Party platform

WASHINGTON -- Freedom to Marry announced the "Democrats: Say I Do" campaign, calling on the national Democratic Party to include a plank supporting gay and lesbian couples’ freedom to marry in the party’s 2012 platform.

The platform will be ratified at the Democratic National Convention, which begins Sept. 3 in Charlotte, N.C.

“An overwhelming majority of Democrats support the freedom to marry, as do a significant majority of Independents and voters under 50 across the political spectrum,” said Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry.

San Diego Blue Dog Democratic Coalition to host first meeting in January

SAN DIEGO -- A new political organization is coming to town, and its leaders hope to provide an alternative for people who are dissatisfied with other political parties or organizations.

The San Diego Blue Dog Democrat Coalition plans to host its first mixer in January and is looking for community members who are interested in learning more about the group.

Jeri Dilno reappointed to Balboa Park Committee

SAN DIEGO – Longtime LGBT activist Jeri Dilno has been reappointed to another term on the Balboa Park Committee.

Dilno is a San Diego Democratic Club member and former SDDC president.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders’ nominee was confirmed by the City Council. The committee advises the mayor and City Council on policy issues relating to the acquisition, development, maintenance and operation of Balboa Park.

Craig Roberts is perfect fit for key role with National Stonewall Democrats, observers say

SAN DIEGO -- Craig Roberts, a long-time political activist for LGBT rights, has been elected co-chair of the National Stonewall Democrats.

Roberts has been active in San Diego politics for more than 18 years, and served as president of the San Diego Democratic Club from 1998 to 2000. He has worked on the National Stonewall Democrat (NSD) board of directors since 2001.
