Outed college football player still trying to find a team to play for

When Jamie Kuntz kissed his much-older boyfriend at a football game last September, the 18-year-old all-star had no idea it would set off a chain of events that would stir up a national media storm and throw his life into chaos.

Now, as Kuntz struggles to pick up the pieces, he finds himself out of the closet, out of school and out of football. But could the Midwesterner find a welcoming college team in Southern California, where one local football coach tells San Diego Gay & Lesbian News that he doesn't see why not.

San Diego team wins Gay Bowl XII in Denver

DENVER – The San Diego Bolts won Gay Bowl XII in Denver on Sunday, beating the New York Warriors to claim the title.

After going 2-1 in the round-robin round, the Bolts were seeded sixth in the A-Division playoffs. The Bolts zapped the Salt Lake City Avalanche 47-32 in the first game, then shocked the third-seeded Phoenix Hellraisers 32-21 to advance to the semifinals. The Bolts then whipped the second-seeded Los Angeles Empire 40-32 to advance to the championship game against the top-seeded Warriors.

UPDATED: How San Diego's three teams are faring at Gay Bowl XII in Denver

DENVER – The last-seeded San Diego Sharks are showing some teeth at Gay Bowl XII, the annual flag-football championship tournament, being played this weekend in Denver.

The Sharks won both their Pod F games played Friday, beating the Denver Summit 2 by the score of 26-24 and then knocking off the Phoenix Hellraisers Firestorm, 25-7. The Sharks were awarded the No. 30 seed in the tournament.

Then on Saturday morning, the Sharks swept Pod F play by beating the Michigan Panthers 27-20. With a 3-0 record in round robin, the Sharks will advance to a wildcard game later today.

Three San Diego teams head to Denver for Gay Bowl XII

DENVER – Gay Bowl XII, the annual flag-football championship tournament, will be Friday through Sunday, Sept. 21-23, in Denver.

A total of 30 teams from around the U.S., including from three from San Diego, will compete in the round-robin tournament sponsored by the National Gay Flag Football League.

San Diego Bolts, San Diego Sharks and San Diego Toros will be representing America’s Finest City. The Bolts are seeded No. 1, the Toros are No. 3 and the Sharks are No. 30.

By midday Saturday, the round-robin rounds will conclude and the top teams will advance in the tournament.

Former president of PFLAG dies at age 93

WASHINGTON -- Elinor Lewallen, president of PFLAG National in the late 1980s, has died in Denver, the organization said Friday. She was 93.

Lewallen was a longtime champion of equal rights for LGBT people, and for over 30 years remained a passionate advocate for the cause. The Denver resident continued to attend local meetings longer after she left national office.

Canopy of lights to add sparkle to University Avenue in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- A canopy of lights will soon hang over University Avenue in Hillcrest, as the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) board voted last night to approve a project to add sparkle to one of the neighborhood’s main thoroughfares.

The Hillcrest Light Canopy Project will install 14 strings of festoon lighting -- attached to the buildings on each side of the block -- over University Avenue between Fourth and Fifth avenues. The lights will include technology to allow the light colors to be changed remotely or set on a programmable schedule.

GALA chorus festival deemed a huge success

San Diego couple say United Airlines manager used anti-gay slur

DENVER – While traveling home over the holiday weekend, San Diego residents Billy and Michael Canu say that after an exchange with a group of United Airlines employees over a customer-service issue, a manager called the couple “faggots.”

The derogatory term was used by Rodney Hill, who presented himself as manager after the pair had difficulty getting information from a group of United Airlines employees at the service counter about United’s “Gold Access” program, Billy told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News today.
