Documentary hopes to explore coming out process for athletes

There has been a lot of media attention recently on the strides being made within the world of athletics to create a more inclusive environment for LGBT identifying athletes, coaches, and fans. There are already many out professional women's athletes and, although there are no out professional male athletes, the time has never been better for one to make their sexual orientation public.

DVD REVIEW: “The Doctor’s Wife” is a delightful little gem from Australia | VIDEO

Jonathan Duffy and his “Shameless Self Promotion” videos are a hoot, but you know what? He’s incredibly talented, witty and funny, and his documentary about his life as Click “The Doctor’s Wife” in rural Australia is bound to become a cult classic.

The DVD is being released today by Guest House Films and includes a director’s commentary, deleted scenes and a couple of those “Shameless Self Promotion” videos.

"Give Up Tomorrow" documents a horrible miscarriage of justice

NEW YORK – “Give Up Tomorrow,” an astonishing documentary about an outrageous miscarriage of justice, comes to PBS on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Produced by Marty Syjuco and directed by Mike Collins, a longtime gay couple living in Brooklyn, N.Y., the documentary is part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the “POV” (“Point Of View”) series on PBS.

The documentary won the Audience Award at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival and has captivated audiences around the world, including in the Philippines, where the judicial system failed spectacularly in a double murder case.

"Out In The Open" documentary seeks Kickstarter funding help

"Out In The Open" is a new documentary project, featuring LGBT individuals and allies, that hopes to address at-risk youth who feel isolated because of their sexual orientation or have faced bullying, by sharing personal experiences of those who have been through many of the same things.

SAN FRANCISO – The makers of the documentary “Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton” are reaching out to movie lovers for help to finish post-production.

Kyle DeVries and the “Big Joy” team notified SDGLN about the Kickstarter campaign that concludes in five days with the goal of raising $22,000 to finish the documentary. As of Tuesday morning, more than $12,000 had been pledged.

Janet Jackson to produce film on transgender lives, struggles for equality

NEW YORK — Grammy award winning artist Janet Jackson has signed on to be executive producer of a documentary covering the lives and struggles of transgender people around the world.

New York’s Brainchild Films announced that Jackson, 46, agreed to executive produce the documentary entitled “Truth,” as well as work behind-the-scenes.

Jackson is expected to sit for some on-camera interviews when the filming starts later this summer.

PBS will premiere "Two Spirits" on the Emmy Award-winning series Independent Lens, hosted by America Ferrera, beginning on Tuesday, June 14, at 10 pm EDT and 7 pm PST. In San Diego, KPBS/Channel 15 will air the documentary at 11 pm Monday, June 20.

MOVIE REVIEW: “POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” looks at branding in films

Documentarian Morgan Spurlock (Mr. “Super Size Me”) is at it again – this time bringing his quirky sensibility to the well-established practice of product placement.

Corporations are putting their names on sports stadiums, concerts and research labs; in film, actors are slugging down Cokes or hunching over a Macintosh. Branding increased the visibility and take of films like “Transformers” and “Iron Man.”

Spurlock wondered whether he could finance an entire film that way – a film about product placement.
