San Diego Democrats for Equality continue transformation process

SAN DIEGO -- As the San Diego Democrats for Equality continue their transformation of the club's operating structure, members will have the opportunity to learn more and vote on some transitional matters at the next monthly meeting on Thursday, May 23.

Doug Case honored by City of San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- March 13 was unlike any other day in San Diego, especially for SDSU employee, Doug Case.

“By the Council of the City of San Diego, that this Council, for and on behalf of the people of San Diego, does hereby declare March 13, 2013 to be “Doug Case Day,” announced city Councilmember Marti Emerald.

Case has been an active board member on the College Area Community Council for 27 years and has served as president for the past seven years. As of March 13, Case ended his term as president.

Life with Benny: Signs of the times

With so much of our activism done online and through Social Media these days, it's a lot of fun to see the various posters people make when attending marriage equality rallies and other LGBT pride events.

Monday evening's rally held in San Diego - on the eve of the Supreme Court's Prop 8 hearing - had plenty of great handmade signs and posters in support of equality - including one that went viral!

San Diego Democrats for Equality plans to reinvent itself

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Democrats for Equality have begun a process to "reinvent" the club that has been a fixture in the local LGBT community for nearly 40 years.

Club leaders are working on a detailed process in which they will evaluate, assess, and prioritize the club's strategies and explore alternative governance options for restructuring the organization. Throughout the process, the club hopes to address the following objectives:

1. Examine the role of Dems for Equality in the community;

Doug Case to receive national fraternity/sorority advisor award

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Longtime San Diego State University (SDSU) staffer Doug Case will be recognized this week at the 2012 Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) annual meeting.

Case will receive the Robert A. Shaffer Award, one of AFA’s highest honors, for his efforts to make positive change, build partnerships and mentor professionals in fraternity and sorority life.

Community members expected to pack The Center tonight at LGBT Mayoral Candidate Forum

SAN DIEGO -- With so much community interest in the upcoming mayoral race, the San Diego LGBT Community Center's auditorium is expected to be a full house tonight at a forum in which each of the top four candidates for the office will address the crowd.

Carl DeMaio, Bonnie Dumanis, Bob Filner and Nathan Fletcher are all scheduled to attend the forum.

The LGBT/District 3 Mayoral Candidate Forum will begin at 6 pm and has been organized by The Center and a coalition of community organizations to give the candidates the opportunity to address the concerns of LGBT San Diegans.

Charles McKain, pioneer in San Diego LGBT politics, dies at age 65

SAN DIEGO -- Considered by some to be a "pioneer" in San Diego LGBT politics, Charles McKain ("Charlie") died Saturday, March 17. He was 65 years old.

McKain retired as a staff attorney for the Fourth District of the California Court of Appeal. He graduated from Hoover High School in 1963, and went on to earn a history degree from Stanford University and Juris Doctorate from the UCLA School of Law. He was an active member in many local Democratic Clubs, and served on the board of the San Diego Democratic Club, now known as San Diego Democrats for Equality, for many years.

San Diego Democrats for Equality to consider several endorsements at meeting Thursday

SAN DIEGO -- The next general meeting of the San Diego Democrats for Equality, to be held at 6:30 pm Thursday, Feb. 23, will feature endorsement forums on a number of San Diego County races.

The organization, which fights for LGBT equality while foster the ideals of the Democratic Party, will consider endorsements for the 51st Congressional District; San Diego City Council District 7; the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Districts 1, 2 and 3; and Chula Vista City Council seats 3 and 4.

COMMUNITY PROFILE: Doug Case

Decades of San Diego State University students have come to know Doug Case, who for many years, oversaw the fraternities and sororities at the school.

What many of the students there don't know, is how active he is in the outside community, as well.

Case, who is single, grew up in Atlanta, Ga. but has been in San Diego for 34 years. When asked about his age, he gave the following answer:

TODAY: SDSU to celebrate LGBT History Month with rainbow flag raising and Big Gay BBQ events

SAN DIEGO -- To celebrate LGBT History Month, San Diego State University (SDSU) will host a series of public events today on the campus.

The day will kick off with a rainbow flag raising ceremony at noon on Campanile Walkway near the school's Hepner Hall.

A replica of the original eight-color rainbow flag, owned by SDSU administrator Doug Case, will fly over the campus for the remainder of the day. Case's flag was autographed by Gilbert Baker who designed the rainbow flag in 1978.
