Carl DeMaio looks to expand national marketing for San Diego LGBT Pride

SAN DIEGO -- Last week Councilmember Carl DeMaio made a request at the City Council meeting instructing the Tourism Marketing District, a non-profit organization that promotes tourism in San Diego, to partner with the San Diego LGBT Pride organization to study ways to enhance marketing and promotion strategies to bring in more out-of-town visitors for the annual Pride Parade and Festival.

Kelly Rowland cancels San Diego Pride appearance, new entertainment lineup announced

SAN DIEGO -- After Saturday's announcement that Kelly Rowland has cancelled her scheduled performance at this year's San Diego LGBT Pride festival, the organization has announced a re-energized entertainment lineup featuring Alex Newell, who plays “Unique/Wade,” a transgender character, on the hit television show "Glee."

Newell, who will also take part in this year's LGBT Pride Parade, will be billed as a headline performer, along with the previously announced Natasha Bedingfield.

VIDEO: World's first Harvey Milk Street unveiled in San Diego

SAN DIEGO – More than 300 people gathered at what is now the corner of Harvey Milk Street and Centre Street in Hillcrest to witness the unveiling of the signs that indicate the new street name at a late afternoon ceremony on Tuesday, May 22.

The ceremony was held on Milk’s birthday, who would have been 82 years old on Tuesday.

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego will become the first city in the nation to honor legendary LGBT civil rights icon Harvey Milk with a street naming. Today, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to approve a proposal which will rename Blaine Avenue in Hillcrest as Harvey Milk Street.

City Councilmember Todd Gloria, who represents the district in which the street is located, said he is pleased with the vote.

BREAKING NEWS: Planning commission rejects Hillcrest Pride Flag project, but City Council to make final decision

SAN DIEGO – The City of San Diego’s Planning Commission today voted 4-2 to not recommend the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) application to install a 65-foot Pride flagpole at the intersection of Normal Street and University Avenue, but the project could still obtain the approval of the City Council.

The proposal calls for a rainbow flag to fly year-round on the flagpole, which is in the heart of the gayborhood and near The Center.

San Diego Pride's annual "Out at the Park" event set for May 19 at Petco Park

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego LGBT Pride’s annual “Out at the Park” will take place on Saturday, May 19, at 7:05 pm at Petco Park when the Padres host the Angels in interleague play.

Pride officials say that this year's event will be the largest yet.

The game will will mark the first series that baseball superstar Albert Pujols will appear in San Diego as a member of the Los Angeles Angels.

Tickets to the game purchased through San Diego Pride are $15, which is discounted from the $18.50 individual ticket price paid by those purchasing tickets directly from the Padres.

San Diego Pride: We will vigorously defend civil lawsuit filed by festival attendee

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego LGBT Pride officials said today they will "vigorously defend" a civil lawsuit brought against the non-profit organization and "strongly deny" allegations made against them in connection with an arrest made at last year’s Pride festival.

Uptown Planners votes to support Harvey Milk Street project

SAN DIEGO – The proposal to rename Blaine Street in Hillcrest after LGBT civil rights hero Harvey Milk received a thumbs-up from the Uptown Planners at a meeting Tuesday night.

The Uptown Planners board, which is a citizens group that provides advisory recommendations to the City of San Diego regarding land use and projects in the neighborhoods within the Uptown Community Plan area, voted 6-4 in favor of changing the street’s name to Harvey Milk Street.
