Gay Catholics barred from entry to Mass, threatened with arrest

NEW YORK -- A group of gay and allied Catholics gathered to worship together at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City with dirty hands in response to comments made by Cardinal Timothy Dolan. However, even as they were gathering, they were told by the police that they would be barred from entering the Cathedral unless they washed their hands.

Vietnam: Flawed on human rights, but a leader in gay rights

Vietnam's burgeoning gay rights movement got a major boost recently when the country's Ministry of Health came out in support of legalizing same-sex marriage. At a hearing to discuss marriage law reforms on April 16 in Hanoi, deputy minister of health Nguyen Viet Tien proposed that same-sex marriage be made legal immediately: "As human beings, homosexuals have the same rights as everyone else to live, eat, love, and be loved," he said, according to local media.

Iowa high court rules children born to married lesbian couples have two birth parents

DES MOINES, Iowa - Tthe Iowa Supreme Court today built upon its ruling in Lambda Legal's landmark case, Varnum v. Brien, which ordered that same-sex couples and their families be treated equally under Iowa law, and ordered the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) to provide an accurate two-parent birth certificate to all children born to lesbian married parents in Iowa.

The Court was unanimous in ordering the State to treat children of lesbian couples as having two parents at birth.

Rhode Island governor signs marriage-equality bill into law

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Gov. Lincoln Chafee, an Independent, signed the newly-passed marriage-equality bill into law today, as Rhode Island becomes the final New England state to legalize same-sex marriage.

The Providence Gay Men's Chorus serenaded the audience before the signing ceremony, held on the South Steps of the historic state House. Several gay lawmakers poured out their thanks for everyone who came together to pass the bill.

Hundreds of supporters cheered and hugged each other after Gov. Chafee took his pen and signed the bill in a formal ceremony.

Legally married lesbian parents told to split up or son will be expelled from school

MPUMALANGA, South Africa -- An Mpumalanga lesbian couple has been told to split up, or their son will face expulsion from school, it was reported on Wednesday.

Legally married Samantha (27) and Kally Mabe (26) told The Star newspaper that they were called to a meeting with the principal of Secunda Highveld Christian School and were told their homosexuality was problematic.

They were also accused of falsifying the information stating their sexual orientation in the school's application letter.

Three more Brazilian states allowing same-sex marriage

Justices in the Brazilian states of Rondônia, Paraíba and Santa Catarina have ruled to authorize marriage equality for same-sex couples, bringing the total to 14 of the country’s 27 states to legalize same-sex marriage.

The ruling by the Corregedor Geral de Justiça caps a month where five state justices in Brazil ruled in favor of same-sex marriage.

New chapter for Colorado families begins as civil unions start today

DENVER — A new chapter for Colorado families began today at 12:01 am when hard-fought legislation for civil unions took effect, allowing same-sex couples to form civil unions for the first time.

Same-sex marriages performed in other states were immediately recognized civil unions under Colorado law, and Colorado same-sex couples were the first time allowed to fill out paperwork for civil unions licenses at county clerks’ offices, including Denver’s Webb building where Mayor Hancock officiated the state’s very first union between Fran and Anna Simon.

State Department allows Mariela Castro to attend Equality Forum 2013

PHILADELPHIA -- The U.S. State Department has lifted its travel ban on Mariela Castro and authorized her to visit Philadelphia to participate in Equality Forum 2013, a national and international LGBT civil rights summit with Cuba as the featured nation.

Mariela Castro, daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro, accepted being a panelist on the Cuba: Featured Nation Panel and being the recipient of the International Ally for LGBT Equality Award at the International Equality Dinner at Equality Forum 2013.
