Equality California to honor Vincent Pompei at San Diego ceremony

SAN DIEGO -- Vincent Pompei has been named the State Farm Good Neighbor Award honoree for the San Diego Equality Awards on June 1, presented by Equality California.

Pompei is the project director for the Center for Excellence in School Counseling and Leadership, and the chair for the only national educator conference focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth. He is currently a full time doctoral candidate at San Diego State University and is a former middle school and high school teacher.

Equality California extends its LGBT outreach in the Central Valley

LOS ANGELES -- Equality California (EQCA) announced today two parallel events designed to extend its LGBT education and outreach efforts in the Central Valley.

EQCA, the largest LGBT advocacy organization in California, will host a Town Hall meeting followed by a “Health Happens with Equality” briefing on Thursday, May 16 at 6 pm at the Fresno LGBT Community Center. Both events are free and open to the public.

County Supervisor Dave Roberts to be honored at Equality Awards in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- The annual Equality Awards, presented by Equality California (EQCA), will be held in San Diego on Saturday, June 1 from 6-11 pm, honoring San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts.

The event will include a reception, dinner and awards, and an after-party. California Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins will be the special guest, and the evening's host will be Michael Chen of ABC 10. USC constitutional law expert professor David Cruz will provide an update on the pending U.S. Supreme Court decisions during the event.

LGBT youth lobby California lawmakers, demand opportunity to succeed in school

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Dozens of high school students are in the state Capitol today advocating for two bills to help ensure all youth — including LGBT youth — have the opportunity to stay in school and succeed.

The youth are gathered for the eighth annual Queer Youth Advocacy Day, which unites LGBT and straight ally youth activists from Gay-Straight Alliance clubs across state.

Three EQCA-sponsored bills clear committees with bipartisan support

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Three Equality California-sponsored bills focused on reducing discrimination and improving the health and equality of LGBT Californians have passed their respective committees with broad, bipartisan support.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Cultural Competency for Health Care Providers Act (AB 496), authored by Assemblymember Richard Gordon, passed the Assembly Business, Professions and Consumer Protection Committee by a bipartisan vote of 10-1-1.

Equality California backs 5 bills on health care, transgender equality and non-discrimination

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Equality California announced today its sponsorship of five bills in the 2013-14 legislative session focused on reducing discrimination and improving the health and equality of LGBT Californians.

California bill would remove state tax exemption for youth groups that discriminate

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- On the heels of the controversy surrounding the Boys Scouts of America's policy to exclude members of the LGBT community as Scouts or adult leaders, state Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach) and Equality California today announced the introduction of new legislation that would remove a state tax exemption for any youth group, including the Boy Scouts, that discriminate against members and leaders on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Lambda Legal urges Ninth Circuit to uphold law banning "ex-gay" therapy for California minors

SAN FRANCISCO -- - Lambda Legal, representing 12 regional and national organizations working with LGBT youth, filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals today urging the court to uphold the California law prohibiting state-licensed mental health providers from using dangerous efforts to change sexual orientation - sometimes referred to as "ex-gay therapy" - with minors.
