COMMENTARY: Shame on ESPN, Chris Broussard and Mike Wallace | VIDEO

I love ESPN. I watch it a lot. I also read ESPN online and ESPN magazine. You can guess that I love sports.

What I don’t expect from ESPN is anti-gay, homophobic bible-thumping rhetoric of the type spewed out today on “Outside the Lines” by ESPN magazine’s senior writer Chris Broussard, reacting to the breaking news that NBA center Jason Collins had come out.

Soccer player for Houston Dynamo apologizes for anti-gay slur

Houston Dynamo midfielder Colin Clark has apologized in a three-post Twitter statement for using a gay slur toward a ball boy during a 2-0 loss at Seattle on Friday night.

Clark, in his third season for the Dynamo and playing his eighth in the MLS, can be seen in a video replay jogging toward the sideline for a throw-in, appearing to signal to the attendant for a ball as the game ball skips out of bounds.

After Clark is issued a new ball at his feet and forced to pick up the ball, he utters a gay slur toward the ball boy before making the throw-in.

COMMENTARY: Speaking about Jeremy Lin - Stop the racial "Linsanity"

With two weeks of fairy tale play this February, New York Knicks basketball player Jeremy Lin went from unknown NBA draft reject to the underdog sports hero who sparked “Linsanity.”

Along the way, media outlets and fans have commented about his academic prowess (a Harvard degree!) and unfurled a barrage of Lin puns (“Linning!” and “Lincredible!”). Perhaps all too predictably, Lin’s rise has come with observations about his race – sparking pride among Asian-Americans, but also debate about racism in sports and America.

VIDEO: Backlash against Avery's support of marriage equality creates malestrom of LGBT support

It's hard to gauge who did more to advance the cause of legalizing gay marriage in the past week -- New York Rangers forward Sean Avery (the first pro athlete to publicly support New Yorkers for Marriage Equality), or the father-and-son sports agent team of Don and Todd Reynolds, whose swift attacks of Avery's stance caused a remarkable thing to happen.
