If writer-director John Cameron Mitchell hoped to seize America’s collective sexual repression by the balls, he did good to begin his second film with explosive vignettes of actual sex, including a comical S&M scene and an "oh-no-he-didn’t" depiction of auto-fellatio.

VIDEO: Actor Anthony Rapp to appear at FilmOut San Diego's showing of "Rent" on Wednesday

SAN DIEGO – Anthony Rapp, who originated the role of Mark Cohen in “Rent” on Broadway and played the same character in the film, will be in town Wednesday night when FilmOut San Diego presents the movie at the historic Birch North Park Theatre.

SAN DIEGO – How will “Cruising,” which caused such a ruckus when the film came out in 1980, play in 2011? Will it be viewed as controversial as it was 31 years ago?

SAN DIEGO -- FilmOut San Diego's will be showing the movie version of "Little Shop Of Horrors," directed by Frank Oz of "Muppets" fame.

Steve Martin, John Candy, Vincent Gardenia and Bill Murray star in the movie, which will screen at 7 tonight at the historic Birch North Park Theatre, 2891 University Ave. Tickets cost $10.

Based on the Roger Corman cult classic, this film version slams together twisted humor, a singing plant, a sadistic dentist, and sweet and oblivious love between two skid-row denizens into a rollicking musical well worth watching again and again.

VIDEOS: FilmOut San Diego to offer thrills and chills at Thrill-O-Rama

SAN DIEGO -- The historical Birch North Park Theater will open its doors to all manner of spooks and ghouls at FilmOut San Diego's 12-hour horror fest, Thrill-O-Rama.

On Saturday, Oct. 8, the six films will begin playing at noon and run until midnight. With this year's selection, there is something for every horror fan.

Diversionary Theatre to stage ambitious "Edward II" production

SAN DIEGO -- Richard Baird returns to San Diego to direct the largest Diversionary Theatre production to date – 15 actors playing numerous roles in “Edward II” in an intense account of the struggle between passion and responsibility.

SAN DIEGO – “The Green,” a thought-provoking film about a gay teacher in rural Connecticut who unfairly comes under suspicion of inappropriate behavior with a high school boy, was the big winner at FilmOut San Diego’s 13th annual LGBT Film Festival.

FilmOut San Diego to move festival dates in 2012, seeking new board members

SAN DIEGO – FilmOut San Diego’s 13th annual LGBT Film Festival was another profitable venture for the nonprofit, but the board of directors voted Tuesday night to move the event back to April after overall attendance slipped from last year.

The nonprofit also issued a request seeking candidates to join the board of directors.

The film festival, which was presented for the first time over two weekends (Aug. 19-21 and Aug. 26-28), showed a record-breaking 60 features and short films. The overall attendance was 4,084 this year, compared to 5,086 in April 2010.

Derek Jarman film, "Edward II," to screen at Diversionary Theatre

SAN DIEGO -- FilmOut San Diego and the Diversionary Theatre are teaming up to screen Derek Jarman’s film adaptation of "Edward II" as part of Diversionary’s “Audience Extras” program.

The film will be shown at 7:30 pm Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Diversionary Theatre, 4545 Park Blvd. in the University Heights neighborhood. Tickets are $10.
