It's official: France's president signs marriage-equality bill into law

PARIS -- France becomes the 14th nation in the world to legalize marriage equality, after President Francois Hollande signed the bill into law today.

The first same-sex marriages can be held as early as May 28, 2013 ... but the BBC reported that Parliamentary Relations Minister Alain Vidalies told French TV he expected the first ceremonies to take place "before 1 July."

"Now it is time to respect the law of the Republic," Hollande said, apparently directed at critics who have held violent street protests over the past few months at the nation's lawmakers debated the bill.

PARIS – Vive la France! The National Assembly voted 331-225 today to legalize marriage equality in France.

The final vote brings to an end months of contentious debate and street protests from conservatives and religious factions, led by the Roman Catholic Church, that oppose same-sex marriage. The emotions were very high today in the National Assembly, and at one point several people were seen shoving each other in the gallery.

The passage of the bill brought out loud applause and cheers from the 331 lawmakers who voted for marriage equality.

France's Senate approves marriage-equality bill; second reading necessary

PARIS – France’s Senate voted today to approve the marriage-equality bill. The vote was not close, and was conducted by a show of hands.

Because the Senate tinkered with minor items in the comprehensive bill, the measure will require a second vote by both the National Assembly and the Senate. The bill is expected to sail through the second reading.

The marriage-equality bill has stirred passions on both sides of the issue, although a thin majority supports the measure. Opponents have held large rallies against the bill, and anti-gay violence has spikes in recent weeks.

France soars over last big hurdle in race to marriage equality

PARIS – France’s Senate today took a huge step toward approving marriage equality in the first of a series of votes on the proposed law.

After more than 10 hours of debate, the Senate voted 179-157 on Section 1 of the bill, which will remove all gender references on marriage applications.
The upper chamber did not change the language of the bill, which was approved 329-229 by the National Assembly on Feb. 12 with 10 deputies abstaining.

Paris gay couple say they were beaten amid rise in homophobic attacks

PARIS — A gay couple in Paris said they were attacked and beaten on Saturday for walking arm-in-arm in what LGBT advocates in the country say is indicative of a rise in anti-gay attacks in France since Parliament began debating a measure that would legalize same-sex marriage.

French government presents same-sex marriage, adoption bill to Parliament

PARIS — The French government has presented its plan to legalize same-sex marriage and adoption to Parliament for debate.

Justice Minister Christiane Taubira told the national assembly Tuesday that the bill constitutes an “act of equality. … Finally, marriage will be a universal institution.”

“We have never underestimated the importance of this reform,” Taubira said of the plan that’s divided the Catholic-majority country.

Hundreds of thousands march in Paris to oppose marriage equality

PARIS — Several hundred thousand people converged at the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Sunday to protest the French president’s plan to legalize same-sex marriage and allow same-sex couples to adopt and conceive children.

The protest march started at three points across Paris, filling streets throughout the city as demonstrators walked more than 3 miles to the grounds of the Eiffel Tower. Paris police estimated the crowd at 340,000, making it one of the largest demonstrations in Paris since an education protest in 1984.
