BREAKING NEWS: EQCA decides not to pursue marriage on 2012 ballot, starts public education project

SAN FRANCISCO -- Equality California announced today that it will not lead an effort to repeal Proposition 8 on the 2012 ballot but would instead launch a new public education project, “The Breakthrough Conversation,” designed to overcome the psychological, cultural and emotional triggers around LGBT people and kids that continue to impede securing full equality, including the freedom to marry.

Pentagon: Military chaplains can conduct same-sex weddings where permitted

WASHINGTON – The nation’s leading LGBT groups today praised the Pentagon’s decision to allow military chaplains to perform wedding ceremonies where they are legal and if such ceremonies are consistent with their religious traditions.

The Department of Defense today clarified this policy just days after the implementation of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Supporters are calling this an important step to preserving the religious freedom of military chaplains and removing discriminatory barriers for America’s troops.

UK takes big step toward marriage equality, proposed for 2012

LONDON -- The United Kingdom, which is ruled by a coalition government under conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, said today that it would create a consultation to expand civil partnerships to marriage equality.

Lynne Featherstone, the UK's Equalities Minister who is a Liberal Democrat, made the announcement that pleased marriage-equality supporters around the globe. She said the consultation would begin in March 2012 with the goal of changing the law ahead of the next election scheduled in May 2015.

Chely Wright: North Carolina vote a "sucker punch" to LGBT community

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Country music artist and LGBT activist Chely Wright is lending her voice and her support to the marriage equality activists who are staging rallies in North Carolina this week, in response to a stunning move by the state legislature to pass a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage -- and civil unions -- across the state.

The measure was passed by the NC House on Monday, September 12, 2011 and by the Senate on Tuesday, September 13.

North Carolina is currently the only southern state without a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

Activist Charlene Strong prepares to take her personal story of tragedy and triumph on the road

SEATTLE -- Charlene Strong, a human rights commissioner for the state of Washington and co-editor of The Seattle Lesbian, is embarking on a collegiate tour across the United States this Fall, to discuss same-sex partner hospitalization rights, end-of-life decision rights, marriage equality and other aspects of LGBT rights.

Strong will share her own personal experiences of tragedy and triumph, which were chronicled in the 2008 documentary, "for my wife ..."

VIDEO: Larry King joins NOH8 campaign to tell President Obama to support marriage equality

NEW YORK -- Emmy Award winning broadcaster Larry King, who has interviewed every U.S. president since Gerald Ford, has spoken up for the LGBT community by telling President Barack Obama to support marriage equality.

In a video created by the NOH8 Campaign and Freedom to Marry, King says to Obama: “Many of your fellow elected officials have already taken a stand … Please, Mr. President, support the Freedom to Marry.”

World’s largest psychology group endorses marriage equality

WASHINGTON – Advocates of marriage equality got a huge boost when the world’s largest and most respected psychology group on Wednesday voted unanimously to support same-sex marriage.

The American Psychological Association (APA) policy-making panel voted 157-0 to approve a resolution to support marriage equality, citing an abundance of new studies that show that same-sex couples share the same goals as opposite-sex couples in building “stable, long-lasting and committed intimate relationships and are successful in doing so.”

Marriage advocates ask Rhode Island governor to veto any civil unions bill

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – On the heels of a marriage victory in New York, a group of marriage advocates sent a letter late Tuesday to Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, calling on him to veto the civil union bill currently under consideration if it comes to his desk in its present form.

The bill contains a provision that would allow religious organizations and their employees to disregard couples’ civil union status, creating unprecedented, onerous and discriminatory hurdles for same-sex couples seeking to take care of one another.

VIDEOS in English & Spanish: Legally married couple facing deportation due to DOMA share their story

NEW YORK -- Cristina Alcota and Monica Ojeda were legally married in the United States but face possible separation due to the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

While the couple was married in Connecticut, federal immigration protections do not apply to same-sex couples because of DOMA.
