COMMENTARY: Let's stop this charade by anti-gay hate groups

Today, I sat through hours of testimony with groups named "Coalition for Life of Iowa," "Linchpins of Liberty" and the "National Organization for Marriage" about their political activities being questioned by the Internal Revenue Service.

Student Non-Discrimination Act would protect LGBT students

WASHINGTON – The Human Rights Campaign today thanked Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) for putting LGBT young people first by introducing the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA) in the U.S. Senate.

The act would prohibit discrimination against any public school student on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. SNDA would also prevent discrimination against students because of the actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity of a person with whom that student associates or has associated.

House of Lords advances marriage-equality bill

LONDON – The House of Lords voted today to approve the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill.

On May 21 the House of Commons, the lower chamber of Parliament, voted 366-161 to approve the bill. The bill would only apply to England and Wales.

Today, the House of Lords first had to vote down an amendment by Lord Dear, who has made all sorts of anti-gay and homophobic claims during the debate. The House of Lords overwhelmingly voted 390-148 to reject Lord Dear's attempt to derail marriage equality.

GOP should not "crusade against same-sex marriage," College Republicans say

Republicans should back off opposition to same-sex marriage, College Republicans argue in a new report on how to gain the support of young voters.

Using a March survey of young voters, those under 30, by the College Republicans National Committee, the report found that many young voters would not vote for a Republican candidate if they opposed same-sex marriage, even if they agreed with the candidate on a range of other issues.

Poll: Californians favor the freedom to marry

LOS ANGELES -- California is ready for the resumption of marriage for same-sex couples, Equality California announced today based on polling of likely voters showing 55% favor the freedom to marry, an increase of 18% since 2004.

Intensity of support has increased dramatically as well, with those who strongly favor the freedom to marry increasing from 24% to 42% over the same time period. (Poll documentation can be found HERE.

NOM hosting anti-gay conference in San Diego for college students

SAN DIEGO -- The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) will host its annual “It Takes A Family To Raise A Village” (ITAF) conference this weekend in San Diego, gathering some of the country’s most notorious anti-equality activists to peddle homophobic smears and misinformation to a group of college-aged students.

On May 30 to June 1, college students will gather at San Diego’s Town & Country Resort to participate in NOM’s fifth annual ITAF conference – a weekend-long event aimed at preparing college students to defend “traditional marriage.”

Nigeria: House passes anti-gay bill

The Nigerian House of Representatives today approved the bill banning gay marriage and outlawing anyone from forming organizations supporting gay rights, setting prison terms of up to 14 years for offenders. It has moved a step further to being passed into law.

The bill will now be sent to President Goodluck Jonathan for him to potentially sign into law. Whether he will approve it remains unclear, and both the United States and the United Kingdom raised concerns over a measure that could put foreign funding for AIDS and HIV outreach programs in jeopardy.

Michigan state senators introduce marriage equality bills

DETROIT -- Michigan state senators late Wednesday proposed four pieces of legislation that would advance recognition of same-gender marriages in the
state. Three of the bills specifically address same-gender relationship recognition in Michigan.

An additional resolution calls on the federal government to repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which restricts the federal government's recognition of same-gender marriages.
