LGBT leaders to House GOP: Stop wasting tax dollars defending DOMA

WASHINGTON – Leaders of the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organizations today called on the House Republican leadership to stop funding the legal defense of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

DOMA forbids the federal government from recognizing the marriages of lawfully wedded same-sex couples, legally married in states that allow gay and lesbian couples to obtain marriage licenses.

COMMENTARY: The homophobe on the Supreme Court

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has become a class clown, lacking much wisdom or overwhelming intellect or the ability to overcome his own bias and bigotry.

Oh, Scalia fancies himself one of the brightest minds in the land and he uses – and misuses – his bloody pulpit to advance his personal and political agenda. This is conduct unbecoming of any justice serving on the highest court of the land.

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay – Marriage equality is all but certain in the South American nation of Uruguay after the lower house of Congress late Tuesday voted 81-6 in favor of a bill that would grant the same rights to same-sex couples that are enjoyed by straight couples.

The bill goes to the Senate, where it is expected to be approved in January. President José Mujica says he will sign the bill into law.

"This is not a homosexual or gay marriage law. It is a measure to equalize the institution independent of the sex of the couple," said Julio Bango, one of the authors of the bill.

COMMENTARY: The Supreme Court, Prop 8, DOMA and the gun-toting "Christians"

My partner Susan asked me this morning what I thought about the U.S. Supreme Court hearing the DOMA and Prop 8 cases. I just shrugged and said: “I’ll wait until they rule.”

For me to even say anything about what I believe will happen would just be pure speculation. Who even knows what lies in the minds of these Supreme Court justices? It is, after all, the Supreme Court and we all know that in some cases they aren’t doling out any sort of justice.
