Uruguay legalizes marriage equality

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay – The Uruguay Senate voted 28-8 today to approve a marriage-equality bill.

In December 2012, the lower house of Congress voted 81-6 in favor of a bill. President José Mujica has vowed that he will sign the bill into law.

Uruguay will join Argentina as the only two South American countries to provide marriage for all its citizens. Same-sex marriage is offered in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and parts of the United States, Mexico and Brazil.

Georgia GOP chair: Gay marriage will lead to fraud by straight people marrying each other

The head of the Georgia Republican Party says that legalizing same-sex marriage will lead to fraud by straight people who will claim they are gay so they can marry their straight friends and “get all the benefits” of marriage.

COMMENTARY: Fifty shades of red

The Huffington Post put the map, seen at the right, on its Facebook page on March 29, 2013.

Each area of red on the map shows where someone changed their Facebook profile picture to the Human Rights Campaign’s red symbol for equality. More than 2.7 million Facebook users changed their profile picture on Tuesday, March 26, according to Facebook statistics.

What struck when I looked at this map was the correlation of where the sparseness of red is on the map of red equality signs and where the red is on the map of the slave states, shown on the far left.

SDGLN Poll: Readers predict how Supreme Court will rule on marriage equality

SAN DIEGO – Readers of San Diego Gay & Lesbian News who took our poll are split on their expectations of how the U.S. Supreme Court will rule on marriage equality.

Our poll question was: How will the Supreme Court rule on marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples?

The results, which are not scientific, reveal that 48% of readers think that the high court will provide marriage rights to all, 45% predict that the justices will grant limited marriage rights, and 7% believe that the Supreme Court will deny marriage rights for all.

Lesbian couple weds in Oaxaca after Mexico's high court ruling

OAXACA, Mexico -- Two lesbians last week made history in Oaxaca by becoming the first same-sex couple to marry after Mexico's Supreme Court ruled that the state's marriage law was unconstitutional.

The Oaxaca Front for the Respect and Recognition of Sexual Diversity, which was a party to the legal challenge to the high court, said the two women got married on March 22 during a private ceremony.

Mexico City, one of the world's largest metropolitan areas, also has legalized marriage equality.
