Gay kicker hopes to make history in NFL | VIDEO

Alan Gendreau is nothing if not unique. The devout Christian, Florida native was a superstar kicker for the Middle Tennessee State's Blue Raiders; he is also openly gay. As an athlete at a Southern college, Gendreau was not only a successul team member, but he also felt accepted by his teammates. Now, he has his sights set on the National Football League (NFL).

WASHINGTON -- The National Football League met with LGBT rights groups last week about the push to end homophobia in sports, at a time when speculation increases over whether the first gay player will soon come out in professional athletics.

Gay athletes to raise awareness of homophobia in sport

PHILADELPHIA -- Out professional soccer player Joanna Lohman will headlining an event to raise awareness of homophobia and discrimination in sport.

The GO! (Generation Out!) Athletes event will be from 7 to 9 pm EDT on Thursday, Oct. 11, in Bodek Lounge in Houston Hall at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

The event will provide opportunities for the scholar athlete community to come together to hear stories by OUT sports role models. GO! Athletes envisions this relaunch as the first of many awareness-building initiatives to occur across the nation.

San Diego LGBT ski club is active even in the summer

SAN DIEGO -- For some, it is easy to forget the world offers an infinite number of playgrounds beyond the borders of 92103. Yes, Uptown has many charms, but sometimes you may find yourself craving a type of adventure that cannot be satiated by visiting the latest restaurant or wine bar. This is where the Men’s Ski and Snowboard Club comes in.

The club, more commonly referred to as SAGA, has chapters located throughout California. And although the name implies it is exclusive to men who love winter sports, that assumption barely scratches the surface.

For gay athletes, it's getting better

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- College athletics is gradually becoming more inclusive for gay students. But if athletes are ever able to participate openly without fear of discrimination, it will require coaches and administrators to foster a holistically welcoming environment, from initial meetings with recruits to the halftime pep talks in the locker room.

"If" is the operative word.
