LGBT youth lobby California lawmakers, demand opportunity to succeed in school

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Dozens of high school students are in the state Capitol today advocating for two bills to help ensure all youth — including LGBT youth — have the opportunity to stay in school and succeed.

The youth are gathered for the eighth annual Queer Youth Advocacy Day, which unites LGBT and straight ally youth activists from Gay-Straight Alliance clubs across state.

SAN FRANCISCO -- A report released this week by Gay-Straight Alliance Network examines the effectiveness of different approaches to implementing lessons that are inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQ) people.

The findings illustrate the critical impact administrator support for LGBTQ-inclusive lessons can have, as well as the need to engage all stakeholders in the school community, from students to state education officials.

GSA Network, parents, doctors sue school district over abstinence-only teaching

FRESNO, Calif. -- Gay-Straight Alliance Network today joined parents and physicians in suing the Clovis Unified School District over its high school abstinence-only-until-marriage sex education.

The lawsuit charges that the district is violating California law and putting teens' health at risk by teaching students misinformation and denying them critical instruction about condoms and contraception. A 2003 law requires that sexual health education in California's public schools be comprehensive, medically accurate, bias-free, and appropriate for students of all sexual orientations.

Anti-gay Capitol Resource Institute seeks to overturn the FAIR Education Act

SACRAMENTO -- The anti-gay Capitol Resource Institute received approval Tuesday from the State of California to circulate petitions for a referendum on the June 2012 ballot that asks voters to overturn SB 48, the FAIR (Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful) Education Act, which was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown this month.

The anti-equality group has until mid-October to collect more than 504,000 signatures to qualify the measure for the ballot.

California Senate passes landmark LGBT education bill, sends to House panel

SACRAMENTO -- A bill that would require California public schools to fairly and accurately portray the historic contributions of LGBT people in social science instruction passed the Senate in a 23-14 vote.

The bill now heads to the Assembly rules committee.

The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act (SB 48), authored by Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), would also add sexual orientation and gender identity to the state's existing anti-discrimination protections that prohibit bias in school activities, instruction and instructional materials.
