Last-minute amendment to immigration bill would protect same-gender couples

WASHINGTON -- A last-minute amendment tacked onto the comprehensive immigration-reform bill would provide equal rights to same-gender binational couples, and the nation's leading LGBT advocacy groups are praising Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) for his efforts.

“Seeking equal protection under our laws for the LGBT community is the right thing to do,” Leahy said in a statement Tuesday. “I withheld my anti-discrimination amendment during the Senate Judiciary Committee markup. As the entire Senate turns to debate the immigration bill, the fight for equality must go on.”

First lady Michelle Obama experienced a rare face-to-face encounter with a protester late Tuesday – approaching the activist and threatening to leave a fundraiser if the person did not stop interrupting her speech.

Obama was addressing a Democratic Party fundraiser in a private Kalorama home in Northwest Washington when Ellen Sturtz, 56, a lesbian activist [with GetEQUAL], interrupted her remarks to demand that President Obama sign an anti-discrimination executive order.

Obama showed her displeasure – pausing to confront Sturtz eye to eye, according to witnesses.

Immigration bill excludes LGBT people

WASHINGTON – The Senate’s so-called Gang of Eight today introduced its new immigration bill, and LGBT binational couples are not mentioned.

LGBT groups and allies said they are hoping that the bill will be amended to include protections for binational couples who are gay and lesbian.
Of the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States, about 267,000 identify as LGBT. Of that total, about 40,000 are binational couples.

Acosta is one of an estimated 1 million LGBT adult immigrants living in the U.S. and he is one of an estimated 333,000 LGBT adult immigrants who are undocumented; the figures are provided by the Human Rights Campaign. Many of these immigrants are natives of nations where gays are discriminated against, persecuted, or even imprisoned, tortured or killed by homophobic regimes.

GetEQUAL makes leadership transition

WASHINGTON -- GetEQUAL today announced a national leadership transition.

Two of the national civil rights group's leaders, Felipe Sousa-Rodriguez and Heather Cronk, will become co-directors and Robin McGehee, co-founder and current director, will shift into the role of movement-building strategist.

These new responsibilities are effective immediately.

Marriage equality supporters to rally Thursday before Prop 8 appeals hearing

SAN FRANCISCO -- Same-sex couples and their friends and family will hold a “Free the Tapes” and “Motion to Marry” rally on the steps of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals building at 1 pm PT on Thursday, Dec. 8, immediately preceding the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal’s hearing on two key Proposition 8 motions.

The three-judge panel will hear motions on whether videotapes of the Prop 8 trial should be made public and whether the trial court’s exhaustive decision invalidating Prop. 8 should be overturned because the trial judge was gay and in a long-term relationship.
