I was lounging on the sofa watching a rerun episode of "The Bernie Mac Show" when the FedEx truck stopped in front of the house. The mail courier handed me a letter that stated the following:

"Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), New England's leading legal advocacy organization and a national leader on LGBT legal issues, is thrilled to invite you to be honored with the Spirit of Justice Award at the Boston Marriott Copley Place on Friday, October 26th."

DOMA loses yet again in court

U.S. District Court Judge Vanessa L. Bryant today held in a federal case in Connecticut that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act — the federal definition of marriage — is unconstitutional.

Bryant, in a case brought by Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, follows several other federal judges over the past two years to have reached the same conclusion. Federal judges in Massachusetts, California and New York also have found DOMA's provision defining "marriage" and "spouse" as only being unions of one man and one woman in all federal laws unconstitutional.

BOSTON -- The Rev. Irene Monroe -- nationally renowned African-American lesbian activist, scholar and public theologian whose commentaries appear on San Diego Gay & Lesbian News -- will receive this year’s Spirit of Justice Award from Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD).

“Reverend Irene Monroe was enthusiastically selected by board and staff for her contributions to the advancement of equality for LGBT people,” said Dianne Phillips, GLAD’s board president. “She has set an inspiring example of leadership and compassion for us all.”

UPDATED BREAKING NEWS: Another federal court rules DOMA unconstitutional

NEW YORK -- Yet another federal court has ruled the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, aka DOMA, is unconstitutional.

The First Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld a lower court ruling that found DOMA was unconstitutional, sticking another hole in the federal law that discriminates against legally married gay and lesbian couples.

The ruling by a three-judge panel was authored by Judge Michael Boudin, who was nominated by President George H.W. Bush, a Republican. It involves two closely-watched cases:

LGBT movement shows strength amid 20% revenue drop

DENVER — Organizations working in the movement for LGBT equality are showing strong signs of financial health and operating efficiency in the face of a cumulative 20% revenue decline from 2008 ($202.7 million) to 2009 ($161.3 million), according to a first-of-its-kind report by the Movement Advancement Project (MAP).
