Woman who reported fake anti-gay hate crime is sentenced

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Charlie Rogers, the Lincoln woman convicted of faking a hate crime, was sentenced to 24 months probation and a psychological evaluation.

The judge added seven days in jail and 250 hours of community service for Lincoln Parks & Recreation to the sentence.

Rogers must serve 90 days in jail in 2015 if she doesn't follow probation.

Rogers was also ordered to return all donations she received and if she doesn't know the donors it will go to the Lincoln Police Department.

Gay man attacked on Manhattan subway and nobody came to his aid

NEW YORK -- A 23-year-old gay man was attacked by five people on a crowded subway in Manhattan, and nobody came to his aid.

Urena Morel Frankelly and his partner were riding on the subway when two women and three men repeatedly punched the victim in the face after an argument broke out. The partner tried to help to no avail, according to authorities.

“Everyone was watching — no one helped us. That was a very scary situation for us,” the partner told the New York Daily News.

Facebook post boasts of anti-gay hate crimes

CANBERRA, Australia -- The administrator of a confessional webpage is unrepentant after publishing the offensive boasts of a Canberra man who said he had committed hate crimes against gay men in Civic.

Facebook page Canberra Confessions published an anonymous post from a Canberran who claimed he had met gay men in Cube nightclub in order to lure them outside and bash them.

The confession said the man faked his sexuality to set the trap and then robbed his victims after the assault.

The author bragged he had assaulted three men already and planned to continue the practice.

Teenage lesbian reportedly stoned by ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students

GANEU TIKVA, Israel -- A teenage lesbian was attacked by a group of ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students in Ganei Tikva in the center of the country on Sunday, Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old alleged that she was assaulted because of her sexual orientation and appearance. She told police that she encountered a group of students outside their yeshiva while she was walking in a religious neighborhood, after taking her bicycle to be repaired.

QUEENS, N.Y. -- Lou Rispoli, a well-respected and beloved community leader in the Queens, N.Y., gay neighborhood of Sunnyside, died Thursday after he was removed from life support and sent hospice care, the result of an early morning attack last week.

Rispoli, 62, who lived in Sunnyside for the past three decades, was attacked at around 2 a.m. on October 20 on 43rd Avenue in Queens.

Trial begins in Kentucky gay hate-crime case

LONDON, Ky. — Opening statements began Wednesday morning in the trial of two Eastern Kentucky men who face the first charges in the nation under a section of the federal hate-crimes law dealing with sexual orientation.

David Jason Jenkins and his cousin, Anthony Ray Jenkins, are accused of conspiring to beat and kill a gay man in Harlan County because of his sexual orientation, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Hydee Hawkins told jurors that the two men "bragged to family members" about the April 2011 attack and said they did it "because he was gay."

California: Vice mayor says he was verbally assaulted for being Asian-American, gay

CAMPBELL, Calif. -- Campbell's openly gay, Asian-American vice mayor said on Monday he was verbally assaulted by a woman this weekend on his way to a community festival for his race and for his sexual orientation.

Evan Low told NBC Bay Area that a woman came up to him on Saturday about 3 p.m. as he was heading toward the annual Oktoberfest festivities on Campbell Avenue.

"She pointed her finger at me in the shape of a gun and said, "Bang (expletive), die. Go back to China, you will die," Low said. The expletive was a derogatory word for a gay man.

CLARENDON, Texas — A gay couple in this small, north Texas town said they think that a spray-painted hate message found on their front porch is linked to an anti-gay newspaper advertisement written by a local minister.

Joshua Harrison and Jeremy Jeffers said they found the message “leave or die fags” on their porch Monday morning, and immediately reported the vandalism to the Donley County Sheriff’s office.

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Police in Long Beach, Calif., are investigating an assault involving four U.S. Marine Corps’ personnel who allegedly attacked a film student from San Dimas, Calif., and beat him unconscious outside the Silver Fox, a popular gay-patronized establishment.

According to Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Pratt, officers responded to the Silver Fox at around 2 a.m. Monday, and based on a preliminary investigation, “it was determined that an assault had occurred” by several male suspects after they had left the establishment.
